Shorts Review: Otaku Taco Truck “THE BREAKFAST CUBS”

I’ll be damned, this episode was actually funnier then I thought it would be. Still not great but it feels like the writers are learning from their past episodes. But before we talk that, what’s the story? It’s right after the gang’s oven got snatched so they decide to interrogate the mushroom head to find out where it is but he won’t give the info unless he gets some compensation. Unfortunately without their oven they can’t make tacos and to make things even worst, the three Breakfast Club bears come along and start talking smack to our heroes. This ends with Swiss and Kwala challenging the bears to a bet, whoever sells the most during the afternoon rush wins. And with some help from useless Mari’s tears they invent an ice cream taco and win the day.

Now when I say “funnier” I mean the show for me has gotten a few chuckles worthy, the characters are still too flat for me to become engrossed in their conflict, especially Mari who I have now deemed “Useless Mari” because of all the point she has to the series. Which is none. The episode felt more episodic with its conflict, which I think is where the show is at its strongest. The bears come and challenge our heroes, jokes are made between our TWO important main characters, Swiss and Kwala, and then the conflict is resolved. Simple, clean and straightforward. It’s funny how that simple style works alongside the surreal visual style but there yah go.

Plus here’s another story editor’s note from me to the writers if I was there during production, DUMP MARI and focus on Swiss and Kwala. Those two I’m finally feeling are growing into their archetypes and showing some character conflict. Mari is just off to the side crying with that weird accent of hers. She doesn’t really affect anything that’s happening and plus she’s not even close to being chuckle worthy with her jokes. At least Kwala and Swiss can bust out a good one liner or two. The Breakfast Cubs maybe a slightly better episode then usual but I still can’t recommend it. All the problems I mentioned in my previous reviews still remain but to just a lesser extent here.
