Review: Rick and Morty ”Something Ricked this way Comes”
Spoilers Below
Summer has a job! Unfortunately, Rick thinks she is literally working for the devil at some sort of possessed antique store, but like Rick this guy has a bunch of crazy shit lying around his store that does the crazy. To prove it, the devil gives Rick a microscope that literally would have made him retarded, but he develops a new gadget that can detect the rest of this guy’s shit to see that it’s all garbage. The Devil eventually comes out to Summer about his evil intentions, but despite Rick’s best wishes, she decides to keep the gig.
Rick starts running commercials claiming that he can undo all of the Devil’s curses so anyone can get the Devil’s free shit and not have to worry about any repercussions. This inspires the Devil to try and kill himself, but Summer saves him and offers to help him get back on his horse. She eventually makes it over to Rick’s new shop and tells him that the Devil is filing for Channel 11, so Rick burns his own place down. The Devil eventually builds a site with Summer, but he screws her out of profits after he gets bought out by Google. Summer goes home and decides to make right with her grandfather whom trains with her to get real big and strong so that they can beat the shit out of the Devil.
Meanwhile, Jerry and Morty are building a display proving that Pluto is still a planet, no matter what scientists say. Eventually, the King of Pluto decides to capture the duo while they are making their cases against NASA, but the planet dwellers seem to appreciate the Smiths’ thoughts on their home world of which Morty hears is now dying. Jerry doesn’t want to hear any of this shit because he’s a big celeb on Pluto, but after Morty takes off, Jerry decides to reverse his stance on Pluto. The poor guy gets the shit kicked out of him, but Jerry makes amends with Morty anyway.
Lots of violence this week on Rick and Morty, both with Jerry getting rocked by Pluto and Summer/Rick beating the shit out of the Devil. Speak of the devil, Al Molina was enthralling, and I thought the look of his character was such a grand departure from other devils we may have seen that usually feature pitch forks and pointed tails and horns and as a result I hope we get to see him and Rick go at it a bunch more times in the future. Pluto was a fucking awesome world, too and the inhabitants continue to show the astute character designs of the series to a ‘T’ certainly hearkening back to Futurama’s other worlds.
There were a couple things I didn’t like about this week’s episode, more so than normal. For starters, Jerry’s constant wanting of fame is getting a tad stale, and the montage with Jerry and Summer should have been thrown out altogether because these writers are too smart for that shit. Also, no signs of Beth while her entire family is removed from the household? I don’t buy that nor do I buy the science fair jump off point that the show started out with. I’m sure if you were to ask show creator Justin Roiland how many scripts he has had to do for Fish Hooks’ own renditions of school projects, the numbers would be in the millions, and every animated series on planet Earth has done them in some way, so let’s hope this is the last of Morty’s school projects. Also, could we see some of The Devil’s handy work? I really wanted to see SOME if not ALL of the gadgets work the way they were meant to, but alas not really.
Rick and Morty is such a talented series, I could ordinarily over look some of these cliched plot points, but I know the producers of this series have and can do better.
"There are also other characters that come and go (also owned by the Warner Bros. Discovery conglomerate media company)."
Huh. Is that just referring to other characters from the show itself, or is this implying that the new season is going to have cameos from other WBD IPs
