Reddit AMA Recap: Bob’s Burgers cast and crew

Originally it was scheduled to be Eugene Merman (”Gene”) and Dan Mintz (”Tina”) taking part in a Reddit AMA, but as it turns out we got ourselves some John Roberts (”Linda) and Loren Bouchard (creator) to join Dan in rounding out the cast and crew of a true Bob’s Burgers Q&A minus Jon Benjamin and Kristen Schaal. What still amazes me to this day is how many Home Movies questions Loren still gets despite all of the critical acclaim of Bob’s Burgers. This is a regular occurrence that happens at both Comic Cons and in Reddit AMA’s. Right off the bat Loren was asked if Bob’s Burgers characters Ollie and Andy were indeed the spiritual successors to Home Movies characters Walter and Perry:

yes. i won’t deny it. it was straight up theft, though i like your word “successors” much better. we wanted them to be their own little fellas too though, and we wouldn’t have done it if we didn’t think they were worthy as their own characters.

If you are a fan of Bob’s Burgers you owe it to yourself to check out the Season One home release as it features the original pilot. In said pilot you will certainly notice a bunch of physical differences between the original iterations of the Belcher family as the original shot featured the family with a bunch of ”Gonzo” inspired noses and more importantly ”Tina” was actually a boy named ”Daniel”. Arguably the most popular character of Bob’s Burgers, Tina has become as much of a symbol to the success of Bob’s Burgers as Bart Simpson has for The Simpsons. But, at first when broached with the idea of changing the gender of the eldest of Bob’s children certainly had the character actor Dan Mintz, a tad worried at first:

Well at first it felt bad because I thought it meant they were going to recast me, but then when Loren said they were using the same voice I was excited because I knew it would be such a more interesting character.

Have you ever wondered how Dan Mintz came up with Tina’s groan? Well, John Roberts would note in this session that everyone gets to do three takes when recording lines and then they get to do a little bit of improvisation on the lines after the takes. From the sounds of it, that’s how Dan’s groan came to be:

I don’t remember exactly, but for the Hamburger Dinner Theater episode Loren needed Tina to do a stage fright sound and I tried a few things and that was the sound he liked. Since then I noticed that I make the sound myself when I’m nervous sometimes but I don’t remember if I always did it and that’s where the sound came from or if I started doing it after doing it for Tina.

However, Dan would go into more detail when talking about how he ”channels” Tina when he’s recording:

My inner Tina is pretty close to the surface, so it’s pretty to easy to channel. She has kind of a zen quality of being in the moment with whatever she wants at that moment, so I just try to clear my head of distractions and focus on that one thing.

Do you think Bob’s Burgers would be as successful today had it not been for Tina? Would we still be watching Napoleon Dynamite? Allen Gregory?? Thank the fuck Christ, none of that has happened and we are enjoying what is turning out to be another stellar season of Bob’s Burgers. However, you know what would be icing on the cake? A cross over episode with Archer! Any chance??

Loren: clearly we have to do something. the world demands it. there’s a perfect way to do it, but we just haven’t thought of it yet.

There’s actually a whole lot more to this Reddit and a bunch more hysterical answers can be read here. Bob’s Burgers is all-new this Sunday Night on FOX @ 7 pm EST, check your local listings!
