Review: Steven Universe “Giant Woman”

So, what do you get when you mix an amethyst and a pearl? You get the latest episode of Steven Universe! Find out more after the jump!

Spoilers!

Amethyst and Pearl are playing checkers, with Steven hurling water balloons at the loser. They talk about forming Opal, fused together. After hearing about it, Steven is starting to get obsessed with it. Pearl and Amethyst want nothing to do with it. When Garnet goes off to a volcano, the rest go to find the heaven beatle. They arrive to find a goat, which Steven brings along. The entire time, Steven is badgering Pearl and Amethyst into changing into Opal. Now, we get a Rebecca Sugar musical montage, with Steven trying to get a fused Opal.

They make it across to the temple, to where the heaven beetle should be. After a bunch of yelling, they are attacked by a giant bird. They try to form Opal by doing their form of fusion dancing to get out of the temple, but fail miserably. Steven and the goat get eaten by the bird, and finds the goat trying to munch on the beetle. He grabs the beetle just as a fused Opal punches through the bird. They make it back to the house, Pearl and Amethyst go back to arguing, and Steven learns he can learn to fuse as well. I smell a future episode!

Ok, so did Rebecca Sugar watch Dragon Ball Z for this episode? Because that fusion has a lot in common with it and it was rather badass. One slight problem, however, was that there was not a lot of Amethyst in Opal and as a matter of fact the Giant Woman looked a hell of a lot more like Pearl.  Rebecca’s song for the montage gave me flashbacks to Adventure Time and overall the music for Steven Universe is only getting better and better, and is leagues ahead of what’s been featured on any animated series in recent memory.

In a stunning turn, I have stopped complaining about where the story is going. Here’s why: they are adding so much to the background and powers to the story, it would almost be rushing something that doesn’t need to be rushed. This fusion power is huge, no pun intended. One thing hinted, that is really big, is that Steven will be able to fuse. Now, can any of the gems fuse with one another? Can all of them fuse at once? These are questions we need to get the answers for.
