Review: Space Dandy “A Merry Companion Is a Wagon in Space, Baby”

So, why is Dandy toting a kid around in space? Find out after the jump!

Spoilers!

Meow and QT are looking over a slideshow of famous alien hunters with graffiti faces, made to looks like fools. This was done by a Gentooan. Of course, Dandy listens to half of the story before going off to hunt. Of course, Meow and QT don’t realize that the ship is getting towed. Dandy, however, finds an room with a kid. Gentooans have the ability to switch the mind of a person into a puppet. So, Dandy, meet space penguin. After Dandy flipper kicks the Gentooan, she’s captured. The effect is only temporary, and Dandy is Dandy again. Dandy gets back where the ship is, to find out that it’s towed. After QT and Meow skirt the blame, Dandy and the kid, after a feigned bad touch, they make it to the transportation hub to the registration office. The trip turns into a traditional anime montage. Dandy and the kid skip the train, and continue in a car.

Dandy and the kid stop at a carnival, and the animation with the sand shark blowing glitter or illuminated sand looked phenomenal. They make it to the address, and we learn that this is the little girl’s grandfather. She makes it to the door, and it turns out to be occupied by a blonde bimbo. The ride goes serious, because you get the back story of the kid. The two make it to a motel, and Dandy tells the kid he’s going to Boobies. But from the montage, you can clearly see that it isn’t the case. He’s out most of the night, seemingly tracking down either the kid’s grandfather. This is turning into a very montage heavy episode, this being the second one. Dandy and the girl make it to the station, with two guys in tow.

Someone who seems like her grandfather, gets off the train. She bugs out, thinking she’s just getting ditched, and puts Dandy’s mind back in the penguin. The two hunters show up, looking for revenge on her for making them look like the biggest fools that ever lived. Penguin Dandy shows up, very slow, and attempts to save the day. Just in time, in fact, to go back to his body. Luckily, the old man shows up, and saves the day. Turns out, that Dandy tracked the grandfather down, so they can live their life out  together. Turns out, the kid’s name is Adalie, and she’s destined to join the crew.

Where do I start. The narrator is slowly  becoming my favorite character of the show. His snarky, dry comments about what’s going on is just downright hilarious. Tonight got hit out of the park with the description of Adalie and her species. The writers nailed Dandy in this episode, showing he’s more than capable of thinking about tits and ass. Meow and QT are pretty funny as well, for the entire minute of screen time. Especially the last bit where it’s night, and they’re still sitting outside the impound lot. But the real star of the episode was Adalie. From pissed, to joking, to sad, she showed more of an emotional range in one episode than I have seen in most people. A lot of people I know should take a queue from her. It was a genuine feel good moment. If you missed the last couple weeks, skip last week, and go right to this week.
