Review: Mother Up! ‘Apple’s Story’

Overview (Spoilers Below)

Apple comes home crying about the fact that her project wasn’t well received at school so Rudi convinces her to try something else…but what? Apple sure as hell doesn’t think she’s all that good at anything and despite Rudi’s best efforts it looks lie that could be the case. The one thing that Apple seems to like is being a playwright, so she writes up a script and gives it to her mom who sells it to the school principal to use for the school play.

Unfortunately, the principal is a bit hesitant to throw out the old play and start work on a new one. This causes Rudi to go head to head with the school nurse and take over as the play director and names Apple in the starring role. Eventually the new role gets to Rudi’s head as she now wants to push Apple and the kids to put on the best production ever. This causes Rudi to bring in 2Bit as a consultant and even replaces Apple’s starring role. Due to the new casting change, Rudi feels inspired to completely rewrite her daughter’s work even if it makes her REALLY upset.

Greg asks Rudi to talk to his son Joe, and for whatever reason he starts taking a liking to her, but when Rudi breaks his heart he decides to team up with Apple to get back at Rudi for being a bitch. They head to Apple’s house and wrangles up a leopard-shark with the plans of letting it loose when Rudi takes her bow. Thankfully, Sarah talks some sense into Rudi and as a result she apologizes to Apple with the promise doing HER play. This inspires Apple to tell Greg’s son to withhold on the whole leopard shark attack thing, but the cage opens anyway and the beats goes after Greg. Right at the nick of time, Dick smacks the leopard shark away long enough for everyone to take off safely.

Later on, the nurse tries killing herself in the auditorium, but the leopard shark snatches her up.

Our Take

Just about every animated series on planet Earth has done a premise revolving parents taking over the production of their kids’ plays and this week’s episode of Mother Up plays by all the rules that you have seen before. The Joel/Rudi plot really went nowhere and although we got a dose of that sci-fi stuff that we enjoy so much for this series, it didn’t do much to sway the cliched premises.
