Review: Mother Up! ‘Apple Gets the Pirate Disease’
Spoilers Below
The school threatens Rudi into making sure Apple eats healthier so that she can be cured of scurvy, but the youngling isn’t fond of fruits and veggies. Dick on the other hand, brings home a chicken for a science fair project. Eventually, Rudi decides to bask veggies in a nicotine spray and now Apple is LOVING veggies. When Rudi returns Apple to school, she gets challenged by one of the mothers in a competition to see who has the best kid.
To help her daughter be the top student, Rudi starts feeding Apple a bunch of prescription drugs to help her focus better. Dick’s chicken gets a hold of a bunch of these pills, too and now this thing is shitting eggs like nobody’s business. After winning an art competition, Apple wants to go after Agnus and her chess competition to which Apple also wins. Mrs. Chiu (Aggie’s mom) is beginning to flip out and starts to wonder what Apple might be on to give her an edge. Eventually, Apple starts taking steroids and they give her an edge on the soccer field and worse yet make her look gross and fat. The chicken gains the ability to speak and starts talking to Dick about what life is like a chicken. Mrs. Chiu is looking to test Apple for PED’s, but Rudi declines. However, there’s one more trophy to win and Apple wants it, but Rudi might be getting ready to cut Apple off of her supplies.
Apple starts to flip out and the chicken is looking for his fix, too. Turns out if the chicken doesn’t get his pills he will lose the ability to talk, but Apple busts through the house wall on her way to the last trophy challenge. The ghost of the last kid who won the trophy shows up and motivates Apple to walk a tight rope so that she can get the trophy. Thankfully, Apple gets through her detox, but the school finds out about the tightrope stunt and threatens to call Youth Services to take her kid away. Rudi threatens legal action, and she gets Apple off clean. Dick’s chicken decides to go to a restaurant, but he gets fried.
Again, Mother Up! continues the Family Guy-esque rules in animals being able to talk. Last episode it was a monkey, this time around we have a chicken. However, Family Guy already has had Stewie on steroids, The Simpsons with Marge, so the idea that one of the main characters of a series discovers steroids is really nothing new nor is it new that the parents are actually supporting the cause (if you recall, Peter was the one who pumped his kid with said ‘roids) however the concept of taking a competition story line and mixing with the tried and true roids deal is an interesting twist that I think pays off, but I couldn’t help but want more. Unfortunately, some of the jokes were just bad, like the ghost breaking his ankle and complaining about it and the drama lady constantly butting in wasn’t helping at all, neither. Also, I can’t help but keep on my constant complaints of any dialogue being censored on what is essentially a pay-TV service.
"There are also other characters that come and go (also owned by the Warner Bros. Discovery conglomerate media company)."
Huh. Is that just referring to other characters from the show itself, or is this implying that the new season is going to have cameos from other WBD IPs
