Shorts Reviews: The Fuzz Episodes 7 and 8

Spoilers Below

Episode 7 began with Herbie and Sanchez working in the ammunition locker. I must say that this scene had the funniest joke of the series so far. As Sanchez struggled to count out a large number of bullets without losing count, Herbie got a phone call and began repeating a long address – including zip code – and ended his conversation with, “10-4, thanks a million,” breaking Sanchez’s concentration.

I also enjoyed the next scene, in which the two partners were on a stakeout, and they acknowledged that the cartoony noises are actually audible, and not just sound effects on the show.

Inside the house, Rainbow confessed his feelings for Roxie, but was overheard by Sonny, who simply laughed it off as puppet “silliness” with the rest of the crew – Roxie included. Despite getting some good snapshots of this gang hangout, Herbie and Sanchez were reprimanded by their superior for once again doing too much. The former was put on indefinite suspension.

In episode 8, they wasted no time. But I just did with that meaningless setup. And then again just now. And so on… Anyway, when Rainbow confronted Sonny, Sonny pulled a gun on him, but Rainbow shot first, because he’s a bad motherfucker like that. When Sonny’s goons showed up, Rainbow’s puppet posse sprung out and took all of them down, except Jake, who escaped using a well-timed balloon.

With puppet crime suddenly on the rise (and violently illustrated; well done, creators) due to Rainbow’s increasing power, Sanchez went to Herbie’s apartment to convince him that he’s the only one that can stop the bloodshed. Herbie’s wife suggested that he continue working on the case as a civilian informant, as not to violate his suspension. Turns out she’s actually a criminal prosecutor on maternity leave.

This episode had a few very funny moments. I loved Herbie calling Sanchez racist for his “all puppets look the same” comment, as well as when Sanchez stood up in Herbie’s puppet-sized apartment and broke through the ceiling, exclaiming, “your upstairs neighbors are 69-ing!”

I honestly didn’t care for this show too much during the first few episodes, but it’s really growing on me. Sanchez is hilarious, and there are several genuine laugh-out-loud moments in each episode. I still don’t LOVE it, but I’m at least starting to look forward to watching the next episode each time. And this was by far the best two episodes of the series up until this point.

So until next time: stay fuzzy. After all, it’s the beginning of No Shave November – or as I call it: business as usual.
