Review: Wander Over Yonder ‘The Hat’

Spoilers Below

The Hat is a great resource to get Wander out of tight jams such as his most recent one when he and Sylvia had to escape a giant worm. Turns out the hat gives you what you need, not what you want. For Sylvia it doesn’t work all that great, but for Wander it works great. Unfortunately, he falls off of a mushroom and Sylvia has to use Wander’s hat to find him even while this big ass worm continues to chase Wander’s faithful steed. Eventually, Sylvia begins to make sense of the hat and is able to scare the monster away, but she still needs to find Wander. Problem is, the hat is still a little wonky with her requests and Sylvia gets eaten by the monster. Sylvia gets out and ends up having to negotiate with the Hat so that she can save Wander, but she gets eaten AGAIN!  It’s in the monster’s stomach that she finds a narrowly drowned Wander and is able to use the hat to escape the worm. Too bad the duo is late for lunch!

Am I the only one that was thinking Beetlejuice with the big worm? Tim Burton is actually a pretty decent parallel for Craig McCracken in that both directors create worlds and worlds but they never lose sight of the character relationships nor does the plot get too out of control that you can’t keep up. Sometimes the one-note joke can get a little old and that’s where this one falters a bit, but overall one can’t help but give a tip of the hat for this week’s Wander.
