Review: Legend of Korra: “Darkness Falls”
Nick was nice enough to give us the final two episodes of the season on nick.com. How did the season end? Well, check out after the jump!

Vaatu is loose in the spirit world. Vaatu. goes to fuse with Unaloq, but Korra throws everything possible at Vaatu to make sure that doesn’t happen. Meanwhile, Tenzin, Bumi. and Kya are walking aroud, trying to find Jinora, who is still lost somewhere in the Spirit World. They come across a spider looking thing, that chases them further from the path and off a cliff, and make them even more lost.
Back in the Spirit World, Korra and Vaatu are fighting, and just as she injures him, Vaatu slams her against a rock. Outside, Bolin and Mako are holding their own while Unaloq keeps hitting them with surprise attacks from around the portal. The Aang kids are still lost, but find a fantastic guide by the name of Iroh. Back at the fight, Korra goes back on the offensive, this time by trying to seal Vaatu back in the tree.
While this is going on, Bolin and Mako get sidetracked by the creepy twins, and get defeated. Now, Aang’s children, after getting clues from Iroh, think it was best to get caught by the scorpion spider. They are taken to the Fog of Lost Souls, a prison of sorts, and cast into the cloudy abyss. Now, Korra is trying to seal Vaatu, but Unaloq interferes again, just as Mako and Bolin free themselves from the twins.
Korra is weak from the fight, and is unable to stop Unaloq and Vaatu from fusing, and he becomes the Dark Avatar. So, they fight, matching blow by blow, but Unaloq proves to be more powerful. She is about to get crushed in the ice, as Raava speaks to Korra. After this pep talk, Korra is ready for round 2. In the prison, it seems that the mist is taking its toll on Kya and Bumi, as they are going insane, leaving Tenzin as the only one with a clear mind.
So, by this point, Bolin and Mako are trapped by the twins. Nothing they do is convincing them to free them, until Bolin opens the wet works up and plays to Eska’s emotions. It seems to work, because she lets them go, while kissing Bolin. At the plot, Korra and Unaloq are stuck in a waterbender duel, when Vaatu extracts Raava. Raava is then sealed outside of Korra. In the mist, Tenzin is trying to stay centered, and struggling terribly. A vision of Aang shows up, and tells him to stop holding onto a false perception of him, and just be you. That clears the mists away.
Bolin and Mako interfere at just the right time, stopping Unaloq from sealing Raava, just long enough to get beat into the ground, and for Unaloq to destroy the spirit of Raava, wiping out all of the past lives of the Avatar. Jinora feels this, guides the lot out of the Spirit World, then goes to help Korra. Vaatu takes over Unaloq completely, and starts his bid to begin ten thousand years of darkness.
If this is the final set up for the season finale, holy crap, this is going to be a doozy. The fight between Unaloq and Korra was top notch, and the everything in this story will be concluded in the final episode of the book. I am very pleased with the episodes from “The Beginnings” until now, with that epic feeling finally coming back from the first season with Amon. The characters, especially the twins, showed some real depth. Special notice goes out to finally showing some kinks in the armor of Tenzin, where he started coming unraveled in the Fog. Oh, and on the note of Unaloq becoming the Dark Avatar: I FREAKING CALLED IT!!!
Now, the only question is. “how will this book end?” Well, luckily for you, you can see in our review of “Light in the Dark!”
