Shorts Review: Sports Friends ‘Basketball’

Spoilers Below

Well, folks, this is our last review of Sports Friends. We did the baseball episodes and the football episodes, and now it’s time for basketball. (If only they included hockey; we could’ve gotten a few more!)

The first one starred Anthony Davis and Austin Rivers. I’ll be honest here (because the rest of this article is bold-faced lies) and admit I didn’t know who Austin Rivers was – well, from his cartoon at least. However, when I Googled his name I at least recognized him from his college days with the douches of Duke, and as the son of even douchier former Celtics coach Doc Rivers. I don’t really follow college basketball, although come March Madness I’ll place a few wagers as a quick and easy way for me to get my legs broken make a few bucks. Regardless, the episode was a funny little short, and it didn’t really matter who the players were in this case.

The other basketball clip featured LeBron James and Dwayne Wade, two players I – and everyone else in the world, except maybe those rainforest tribes that have never made contact with the outside world – know very well. The episode topic itself wasn’t especially funny, but it ended with LeBron doing his signature pre-game chalk toss, and a remark by Wade that it, “instantly puts me in a bad mood,” that was hilarious.

Also, I feel like I should mention that I inadvertently left a baseball episode out of the baseball review. It involved Carlos Gonzalez and Troy Tulowitski. I found it humorous.

These basketball episodes, like Sports Friends as a series, were not flashy in any way. The dialogue is simple, there are no plots, scenery changes, or reoccurring characters. Yet, the show manages to entertain, especially for those who follow the sports world. Hopefully we’ll see more famous athletes lampooned in the future, and maybe a few more sports too, eh? I’d rate this episode the same as the show as a whole.
