REVIEW: SQUIDBILLIES ‘THE SQUID STAYS IN THE PICTURE’
Spoilers Below y’all
Say y’all when you want to call on all.
In this weeks skullfucking of Squidbillies, Early tries to teach a Hollywood boy (filming nearby) how to speak and talk like a ‘real Southern man’ – in that way that only a Squidbilly could. Eventually, as he always does, Early eventually fucks this cash-pertunity up, but before he does he unloads a buttload of lessons that everyone can appreciate.
The plot here is fairly straightforward (as aforementioned), but the jokes and nuances here really make it great. I laughed out loud at least three times this episode, and for me that’s a shit-ton. It could be that for a New York boy like me all the wild Southern accents and stereotypes are extra amusing, but even putting that aside, surely the voice/writing combo team here knocks this one out of the park.
I won’t give away all the best lines (although it’s super tempting), but Squidbillies are really pushing the envelope here in terms of offensiveness – and I’m surprised that I’m impressed. I usually don’t like shock type humor, but for some reason I don’t get the usual ‘we’re doing this on purpose to be offensive for the sake of being offensive’ vibe – it just seems organic.
Only criticism here is that again I find the guest characters paling in comparison to the usual crew. I suppose the show does need new [guest] characters to create dilemmas and situations for the main characters to interact with – but – I just can’t put my finger on why they aren’t hitting their stride.
I think from now on I will do Squidbillies justice and always have a tallboy in hand when it airs.
Not the most prolific plot here, but I had a great fucking time.
"There are also other characters that come and go (also owned by the Warner Bros. Discovery conglomerate media company)."
Huh. Is that just referring to other characters from the show itself, or is this implying that the new season is going to have cameos from other WBD IPs
