NYCC Recap: ‘Chozen’ Panel

chozen

Heading into the Chozen panel on a beautiful Sunday afternoon, I had no idea what to expect of the new series coming from Rough Draft Studios and Floyd County set to premier this January on FXX. Welp, thankfully we got to see the whole pilot episode and if the crowd reaction was any indication, this may be FXX’s first original series that stays around for a while.

For those that don’t know, Chozen follows a gay-white rapper named  Chozen played by SNL’s Bobby Moynihan. Turns out this one-time up and coming rap star was thrown in jail on a bad rap (get it?) caused by another rap artist named Phantasm (played by Method Man). When Chozen gets released, he’s hell-bent on making his sister proud (played by Kathryn Hahn) by getting back into the music game and knocking Phantasm off of his super-star perch. To help the cause is a scraggly peeping tom named Jimmy (played by Danny McBride) and a host of other characters featuring the voices of Hannibal Buress, Nick Swardson, and Michael Pena (he MIGHT steal this show).

Overall, the pilot episode was HYSTERICAL and it looked great which is to be expected when you’ve got the team behind Archer on your side. The show almost has a Phineas and Ferb format with it where we kind of move through the plot at a steady pace, but the show is dotted with original music to better help tell the story. Overall, I was surprised by how good it was and you can tell Grant Dekernion is still kind of a genius in the writer’s room (I mean Jesus Christ, Eastbound and Down anyone?) and that’s the most important thing you can have in a series and yea I think this one lasts longer than Unsupervised (but I do think that this show should come back as well).

Chozen premiers this January on FXX.
