GAMES Review: Regular Show ‘Cupcakes of Doom’
STORY
Our story begins with Mordecai and Rigby coming across a recipe for ultimate cupcakes in their own kitchen. They immediately decide to bake up a batch not giving any thought as to where the recipe came from. Skip to the results! The cupcakes are baked, decorated and looking delicious. Oddly enough, our duo has run off somewhere leaving the cupcakes unattended. And unfortunately, the Guardians of Eternal Youth got to the ultimate cupcakes before our heroes could and ate the entire batch.
Mordecai and Rigby return to the kitchen to find that their cupcakes have been devoured. The Guardians felt guilty and apologized for their greedy behavior. Not two seconds later they bulked up and transformed into evil Guardians! Suddenly, Klorgbane crashes in and informs Mordecai and Rigby that he planted a mind control recipe to take control over the minds of the Guardians. He also reveals the only way to heal them is to obtain the “Milk of Redemption”.
With Klorgbane on the loose and the Guardians under his control, it’s up to Mordecai and Rigby to get the Milk of Redemption and save the day!
Fans of the show will notice similar elements from the episode “Fists of Justice” in this fast-paced punching spree, but it actually takes place in a different plotline entirely. You, the player, will take control of Mordecai, Rigby and their Yetti friend, Skips. Mordecai and Rigby sit upon each of Skips’ shoulders and each has a Fist of Justice at their command.
OBJECTIVE:
In each level, the objective is to race down a country road, collecting coins for points, punching through mind-controlled Guardians and avoiding other obstacles that attempt to slow you down… All while trying to catch up to Klorgbane. The player only has about a minute and a half to catch him and face him in the boss fight. There are five levels in this game and after each, you’ll earn a little more Milk of Redemption.
GAMEPLAY:
The controls of “Cupcakes of Doom” are easy to learn but tricky to master. Move Skips left and right with the arrow keys as he speeds up and gets him to slow down with the down arrow key. You’ll also need to punch through mind-controlled Guardians with the Fists of Justice using the space bar. The tricky part is doing these controls over and over with less and less reaction time. The player must also keep an eye on Skips’ health bar on the right side of the screen. The game plays very smoothly. There isn’t really any glitches that will get in your way.
Each level offers power-ups and different obstacles that keep the game from feeling repetitive and tedious. You’ll also come to some forks in the road that will force you to make quick decisions.
The boss fight is always the cherry on top for each level. When I first faced off against Klorgbane at the end of the first level, I was immediately reminded of the Wallmaster from The Legend of Zelda games. It was that hand that would cast a shadow over you indicating it’s impending drop attack. This is Klorgbane’s plan on the action in battle. He will fly above our three heroes and cast a shadow you must try to avoid before he strikes. Your chance to attack comes when he misses.
OVERALL:
This game is pretty decent! It was difficult to find very much about the game I didn’t like. It looks good, plays well and has some replay value (I played it three times over for this review). A criticism I have about the game is that it isn’t funny. When I see the title “Regular Show” attached to a game, I expect some of the humor of the show to be incorporated somehow. Perhaps between levels or even in the intro. Sadly, this game didn’t make me laugh. The music also annoyed me around the fourth level so I had to mute it. These are my only two complaints. I recommend any Regular Show or flash game fan to play it at least once. There is an attention to detail in this that you won’t find in many other fast-paced flash games.
"There are also other characters that come and go (also owned by the Warner Bros. Discovery conglomerate media company)."
Huh. Is that just referring to other characters from the show itself, or is this implying that the new season is going to have cameos from other WBD IPs
