Review: Fish Hooks “Unresolved Fishues”
How many problems can one have when a friend starts dating that person’s ex? The fish tells us all about it after the jump.
One thing I noticed, is that when we aren’t in the fish tanks, this show has a Gumball feel to it. I mean, this has animation on top of a live, static background. Fortunately, I enjoy watching Gumball. Unfortunately, I now know why I’ve never seen this show before. Friday nights are destitute for television. You get one bright beacon with Gravity Falls, but this night is tailor-made for other things, like watching paint dry. Anyway, here’s the review of “Unresolved Fishues.”
Spoilers!
This episode starts with Milo lifting weights with his butt, so he can get his butt ready for the night of sitting he’s in store for with the movie marathon. Jumbo comes by for the marathon, asking Oscar if he can date his ex, Angela. He says yes, then freaks out when she shows up. Of course, they have a bunch of movies and chooses Die Oscar Die, which is a riveting retelling of what happened at Prom between Oscar and Angela. The next night, Milo talks Oscar into talking to Angela at a poetry reading. Jumbo ends up reciting a poem that is equal parts an ode to Angela, and an ode to their version of World of Warcraft. Apparently, this broad loves nerds. Oscar goes, but somehow gets roped into going on stage. His poem isn’t as eloquent. He reads his reasons he broke up with Angela. Of course, this drives both Jumbo and Angela to hate him.
What we have next, literally made me throw up in my mouth. We have Angela and Jumbo walking through the park, cosplaying Star Trek characters. Thankfully, that lasted all of a minute, because we cut to Milo and Oscar in a plane. Milo gets Oscar out of the plane and lands next to Jumbo and Angela. Milo then realizes he can’t fly a plane, and screws up the skywriting. It goes from “I’m sorry, Angela,” to ” I Love Angela.” Angela feels compassion, but Jumbo hits nerd rage so hard, he turns into Goro from Mortal Kombat. After Oscar apologizes, everything goes back to normal.
While I enjoyed the nerd references, this show suffers from terrible writing. There was next to nothing that made me want to keep watching this. The characters were bland, the writing was sub-par, and the premise was just plain odd. Why would all of this be happening in a pet store? I can see if it was in a lake or an ocean, but to have every fish tank have a door doesn’t make much sense to me. Maybe this is just my hate for a nerd stereotype, but Jumbo ranks right up there with The Big Bang Theory when it comes to terrible nerd stereotypes.
"There are also other characters that come and go (also owned by the Warner Bros. Discovery conglomerate media company)."
Huh. Is that just referring to other characters from the show itself, or is this implying that the new season is going to have cameos from other WBD IPs
