We are four episodes in and already Adam De La Pena has a very strong shot at winning best new animated web series for Outlands with new additions like Doug Benson and Felicia Day already putting in strong efforts to an already stellar cast. Adam recently took part in a Reddit AMA and in it he talked up about what it takes to get the series in gear, the future of Code Monkeys, and other projects he is currently working on.

For starters, Adam was INUNDATED with Code Monkeys questions including if it’s possible to see it on another network. According to Adam, on the web is more likely in seeing the future of Code Monkeys but he didn’t specify if that would be more of a Youtube thing, or if he is referring to Hulu or Netflix.  What I thought was infinitely more interesting was his take on writers’ rooms and how he prefers to do script writing:

For Outlands, we do not have a writer’s room. I don’t really believe that they’re the best ways to get the best ideas. It’s a lot of talking to each other and hanging out, all somehow started by ideas that I like and contributions for the writers. It’s really sort of a mess, but it’s a lot of fun. I do believe in the end that there has to be one person, one voice, making the script decisions.”

This makes sense, most of Adam’s shows definitely have HIM in the script. Like any time there is talk about nachos(more on that later) and what not it definitely feels like an Adam show and I think that is the common thread whether its Code Monkeys, Your Dungeon My Dragon, or Outlands. Furthermore, Adam really brought to the mainstream the 16-bit machinima-esque look for all of his shows and it really is like him MO. Nowadays I get people sending me shows everyday featuring 16-bit adventures and Lord knows the Machinima Happy Hour channel is swimming with a lot of them, but Adam really was the one who made that medium somewhat popular. He goes on to talk about his reasoning for the 16-bit style of animation and how he came about it:

I used to work at an arcade. I worked there more than I went to college. I already wasted a good portion of my life in college, and if I didn’t get any value from working in an arcade I would have wasted the vast majority of my life.

And of course what AMA isn’t complete without a question about favorite foods? In this excerpt, a Redditor asks what kind of sandwich he would be if he could be one with Adam maybe giving us a hall of fame worthy answer:

Now we’re talkin’. Let me make this clear, I favor nachos. I think that’s been shown in all of my work. But if I had to pick a sandwich to eat, I like salami and cheese on a baguette. If I had to be a sandwich, it would a monte cristo, because it sounds regal, even though I hate the sandwich in person. But once again, let me be clear, I like nachos.

I like nachos, too. All this and more you can check out on the Reddit AMA and check in tomorrow for our review of the most recent episode of Outlands that goes up every Tuesday only on Geek and Sundry.
