Review: Futurama ‘ Forty Percent Leadbelly’
Spoilers Below
After dropping off a carbonite package, Bender runs into Silicon Red, a famous folksinger on his like 30th prison sentence for who knows what. Turns out Bender always wanted to be a folk singer but instead of doing crazy shit like taking up music lessons, he photo copies Silicon’s guitar, dons some flannel, and after a 3D print job of said guitar, is on his way to performing in front of live crowds. However, as expected Bender just embarrasses himself and is subsequently thrown out of the local folk club. To help build some experience as inspiration for future songs, Bender decides to join up with a railroad company. As expected when Bender gets the gig he doesn’t actually do any work, rather he attempts to write songs about workers that really aren’t true and at the end of the day still not all that impressive for Fry or Leela. One of the workers that Bender writes about his a guy named ‘Big Caboose’ and out of nowhere he sleeps with his girl. When Caboose finds out he grabs a gun and heads to NNY, but Bender is nowhere to be found.
Eventually, Caboose prints up a speeding train and heads to the railroad camp where he pins Bender up against the wall. Bender escapes and now we get an old-fashion chase scene that I’m sure the Lone Ranger movie would be completely jealous about. We soon find out that the guy who did the print job for the guitar early on left the signal on between Bender and the 3D printer, so everything Bender sang came to life. As a result, Bender makes a copy of himself and Caboose kills him, but its cool because the real Bender’s here and he forms a rap duo with Silicon Red.
The plot didn’t seem all that original to me as it almost felt like a futuristic take on Stranger than Fiction, but overall the episode was rather funny. The thing that I truly admire about Futurama are all of the one-liners like Leela’s ‘Cell Phone, Telephone’ quip or pretty much any of the lyrics in Bender’s song. The railroad system was animated beautifully and the premise was thought out rather well, but I don’t remember getting any real closure with Fry and Bender. Also, I was certain Tara Strong would’ve been used more but with an action packed railroad chase that kept me guessing, I imagine AT LEAST 40 percent of the Futurama population will enjoy this week’s episode.
"There are also other characters that come and go (also owned by the Warner Bros. Discovery conglomerate media company)."
Huh. Is that just referring to other characters from the show itself, or is this implying that the new season is going to have cameos from other WBD IPs
