Review: Bounty Hunters “Three Rednecks And A Baby”
Spoilers Below
After getting kicked to the curb following a break up with his wife Stacy, Jeff decides to start investing in his bounty hunters business with Bill and Larry signed on to help and Lisa to help run the place. By investing I mean putting up a bill board featuring a big huge picture of Jeff and two smaller pics of Bill and Larry. It’s here we find out that Stacy has already met a new man and Larry REALLY enjoys Chinese. To try and get the put down on their next caper, the guys mosey on over to Bulk-Mart and we meet up with Jeff’s parents whom are just chilling in one of the display hot tubs chowing down on snacks.
The bounty hunters have setup the perfect trap to thwart Pudro, their latest assignment. This mangy mother fucker has been going around stealing ingredients for a gumbo but without sausage he’s got a vegetarian cuisine…and this ain’t Brooklyn. Alas, the guys head to the Bulk-Mart aisle where the meats are holed up. Once there, the guys fan out and Pudro shows up for what should have been an easy capture, but instead the sausage stealer takes off in a van and we get an ol’ fashioned Southern chase. Eventually, Pudro stops and takes off running leaving behind a baby in the van still in its seat.
Jeff devises a plan to have Bill take the baby back into town while him and Larry chase after the suspect, but Bill crashes the car which means the guys have to hang out until a sober tow truck comes into town. However, instead of waiting around the guys head into the swamp with the baby so they can catch Pudro once and for all. Unfortunately, he litters the swamp with traps and snatches up Larry and Bill. Jeff uses this to his advantage as he uses his friends as bait to lure out Pudro so he can kick the shit out of him and tie this one off. Eventually, he does just that but then a bald eagle swoops down and grabs the baby then flies off into a tree. The guys concoct a plan that features Jeff dressing up as a bunny causing the eagle to swoop down long enough for Bill and Larry to grab the baby. Unfortunately, this causes Pudro to take off running down the street, but the eagle again swoops in and this time picks off the running bounty. The boys round up the bad guy and the baby and head back to base.
Meanwhile, the girls (Lisa, Stacy, and Amber) are having a girls night but Amber’s not really a big drinker. Thankfully, after a few rounds at the local casino Lisa and Stacy help her fix that because Amber gets PLASTERED. Thankfully, the rest of the girls make a pact to not tell Larry about all of the shenanigans Amber got into.
I was never a HUGE fan of the Blue Collar Comedy guys, with the exceptions being maybe Bill Engvall and Ron White (of whom I think was the opener on the first tour) so I wasn’t quite sure if I was going to really like this series. However, after watching the first episode I think there is something for everyone, but I don’t know if that’s a good thing or a bad thing. The series sort of waddles between being really edgy in terms of dialogue (usually with Larry) or rather safe. So, if you are someone whom is easily offended by racial jokes, well then this may not be for you. That said it doesn’t compare to some of the racial stuff that Family Guy and South Park has but it’s definitely there.
As mentioned, Larry takes on the role of being the Homer/Peter type as he’s farting and eating all the time, but in all fairness if you have watched his stand-up and are a fan that’s just fine for you because he does a bunch of those jokes in his routine. Bill is underutilized this episode which I think is a downfall because his stand ups were my favorite, but his Southern sarcasm certainly does show and serves as a stark fun contrast to Jeff’s more disapproving mother-like mythos. That said, Jeff isn’t an angel and even levies a the first of what may be many ‘You might be a redneck’ lines and yes if you were wondering Larry does dish out a Git ‘R Done.
Although the run-time of the episode was less than a lot of shows clocking in just under 20 minutes as opposed to the more standard 23 minutes, the first episode is able to fit in two plots. The idea of this was well thought out even if not perfectly executed with the Blue Collar trio manning one story, and the legendary Lisa Lampanelli leading the pack of not as well known ladies. With the guys we get a plot surrounding them apprehending a sausage stealer and although the premise was weak the ride was rather quite enjoyable and throwing the baby in there was a nice twist along with the swooping eagle. Unfortunately, the same can not be said for the other plot as although I loved Lisa, this is the first time I am getting exposure to her without screaming ‘Cunt’ SOMEWHERE in her rant so I guess it might be something I just have to get used to. Stacy is kind of dirty funny, I mean how many animated shows feature women leaving the door open when they shit/piss? The one misstep here was Amber, and it really has not as much to do with the talent behind, but rather it was hard for me to buy into the fact that she was a goody two-shoes with Lisa here to break her as this was our first time meeting her so its not like we had a bunch of episodes to compare her personality to. The argument here could be that the writers are setting her up to constantly being swayed into fun but ‘bad’ activities, but with that comes a formula and its ugly cousin ‘formulaic’.
Overall, the show is kind of funny and if you are already watching CMT Saturday Nights featuring Stone Cold and Dog the Bounty Hunter then you are already in for a fun night and as such this series is for you. With fluid and crisp animation coming from Big Jump Productions and a decent cast this show has the ingredients, but just like sausage if you make it the same way over and over this could leave you with an upset stomach.
"There are also other characters that come and go (also owned by the Warner Bros. Discovery conglomerate media company)."
Huh. Is that just referring to other characters from the show itself, or is this implying that the new season is going to have cameos from other WBD IPs
