Review: The Looney Tunes Show “The Grand Old Duck of York”

Daffy feels like he needs to start investing himself in something productive so he trades in the house’s TV fr a piano and starts teaching himself right away. Problem is, Daffy is SO bad Bugs has to leave the house and purchase ear buds (and yes a new TV). That said, Daffy seems to take it seriously as he hires Granny to teach him how to play.  Unfortunately, Daffy isn’t getting any better with time and the neighbors start to complain, but Bugs is so tuned out with his buds he seems to be a great sounding board for complaints.  With being a great sounding board, Bugs hears it from anyone and everyone including Sam, Lola, Porky, heck even Daffy starts voicing complaints when after endless amounts of practice his piano skills still stink! Unfortunately, Bugs’ ear buds soon land him in trouble when he is told that Speedy wanted some live music for the relaunch of his restaurant. With his back up against the wall, Bugs convinces to not give up on piano and instead uses him to get SERIOUS late night talent! In the meantime, Daffy goes back to class with Granny and finally earns his FIRST gold star! But, was she really listening??

Daffy’s Legacy

What’s great about this show is the plots are so well conceived and then they intertwine just right to give us a climax you wouldn’t expect! Everyone has wanted to learn an instrument at one point or another and as a result Daffy’s plot doesn’t come off as being wildly original, but Bugs’ take on it with the ear buds was such a novel approach you couldn’t but help and laugh at the absurdity. The motions he goes through as character after character whine and complain to him were really something else and the act that the buds would ultimately lead to demise was a really great idea. I also enjoyed Speedy’s one-upmanship, again not wildly original, but it helped turn up Bugs’ buds plot and that’s what works. Keeping a good plot is all about carriage and I said it last week, this writing team is legit! Now if only we can get rid of those Merrie Melodies we’d be in business!
