Mid-Season Review: Deep Space 69 Season One

Space. The final frontier. Unless you’re Deep Space 69, then clearly there is no limits. In this season alone we’ve seen a spaceship catch VD, an entire planet get “that time of the month,” and the coining of the word “Bonesmithsmanship.” The jokes and humor on this show are second to none. Really, the series started with a line involving “Wookie snatch” and has only gotten better. I don’t think there’s anything better than wookie snatch….wait….that sounds terrible. Every knows I’m pro-shaved.

The art on this show is incredibly imaginative. Being in a space setting, literally anything can be passed off as a living creature. And being so sexually themed, everything resembles, in some form or fashion, something sexual. I’ve gotta admit, I watch episodes multiple times to try and find all the hidden references like they were hidden fuckin Mickey’s. Not to imply that Jay or Hamelton has fucked the Dark Mousey Overlord, but I do smell an amazing pitch for later this season! The coloring on this show pops right off the screen. Again, being set in space the artist can really go nuts with the palate because aliens aren’t just pink and brown like humans.

The landscapes and backgrounds are impressive in their own right. Very detailed and expansive. Like in the episode “Blade Jogger” when the GS-1 is flying through the buildings in the bounding metropolis, you are given a sense of depth and distance by how well drawn the buildings are. When a scene of a ship flying high within a town evokes my fear of heights, you’ve done your job.

And now for the nitpicking…

I truly enjoy the sexually based humor on the show, but after re-watching the series to this point I grew kinda bored of all the innuendo and dick jokes. Pepper in a couple of normal jokes and maybe the sexy stuff won’t become so overpowering. Also, maybe we can see some adventures on Earth? I’d really like to see if Jay has what it takes to land a human. “Land a human”…Nice… Also, With the Galactic Bonesman trilogy, I loved that it had a happy ending, had a bit of a moral (Cheap tricks, small dicks), and it brought up Jay’s father. Maybe we encounter him in an episode?
