REVIEW: OUT THERE ‘THE GREAT ESCAPE’

How does the premier episode of ‘Out There’ fare?? First time reviewer ‘Achilles’ has the answer!

Some people need a catalyst in their lives to unlock the doors which they are too afraid to open. In the first episode (chronologically) of Out There called ‘The Great Escape’, Chad finds his catalyst within Chris (another bullied classmate). Chris is the type of guy that knows he goes against the grain and relishes every second of it. In Chris’s mind he is not the offbeat, he is the enlightened. I feel like Chris is the type of person that you would first meet and be impressed by but would eventually grow tired of once you learned to see threw his showmanship. Either way, Chris means well and genuinely aims to help his new friend Chad find the adventure his life has been missing.

This episode does a good deal of character introductions (almost everyone on the show) –which I suppose is fairly normal for a debut. Personally, I found it tricky to keep track of everyone’s names by the time the show was over (and had to double check online before I wrote this review). That being said, there really are some funny archetypes being thrown around (my favorite character being Wayne, Chad’s ‘son are you on the pot?!’ dad, who is voiced by the boss-as-fuck John DiMaggio).

The main plot-line here revolves around Chris’s grandiose plan to escape from the “crap-hole of a town” he has been ‘stuck’ in. Chad also seems to agree that they are most certainly ‘stuck’ in a terrible hum-drum town for which they will never escape — but doesn’t share Chris’s vigor for flying the coop. I remember this being a fairly prevalent feeling when I was their age growing up in the ‘burbs — ‘nothing ever happens here and nothing is ever going to happen’. The funny thing is that for most, when they hit college (or make some money) at 18 they can leave and see the world –as there really are no invisible fences holding anyone in to their hometown (no matter how much it may have felt like it).

Eventually Chris’s plan hilariously falls to pieces and he decides to stick it out in Holford with his new sidekick Chad. Highlights here include Wayne totally freaking out and the fantasies within Chris and Jay’s imagination being brought to light.

Keep it comin’ boys, and bring me more Wayne — I love that guy!
