COMICS REVIEW: SIMPSONS SUPER SPECTACULAR #16

Bartman discovers a Japanese comic book at the Android’s Dungeon depicting some of his greatest exploits in manga form. And then in a crisis of discontinuous continuities, Plasmo taps into a neighboring dimension to find a replacement for a fallen Superior Squadron comrade, causing a calamitous chain reaction and a world overpopulated with duplicate heroes and villains.

BARTMANGA

Bartman finds out that there is a new type of Manga out in stores that is based on his character and his name is ‘Robartman’. In the first issue released, we read about Robartman’s big fight with the Bumblebee Monster that would’ve ended in a draw had it not been for a pre-teenage witch! That said, monsters in Japan usually become big stars and that’s exactly what happens.

CRISIS OF DISCONTINUOUS CONTINUITIES

Turns out whenever a hero dies that Plasmo can just open up a portal and take on new heroes from other dimensions to help fill that role. However, after a while pretty much the entire Superior Squad is replaced with heroes from other dimensions which means that all of the villains in those dimensions are able to team up and destroy all of the other multiverses. However, once they reach Plasmo’s home-verse, the hero summoner high-tails it out of there to a world that doesn’t have heroes or villains…just ladies!

Wow, and just like that we have an early favorite for best Bongo Comic issue of the year!  Bartmanga was out of control with pencils done by Nina Matsumoto that do a fantastic job of turning the Simpsons into anime-influenced characters that look so good that I think they deserve their own monthly issue. Granted, I personally know NOTHING about manga, anime,, or whatnot, but this story was such a great departure that the changes were very welcome and they went with a plot that was classic Bartman with a Japanese-twist. The ‘Crisis’ story was really good, too. Anyone of whom has enjoyed the Family Guy episode “Road to the Multiverse”  will surely enjoy this as we get a bunch of different interpretations of some of our favorite Superior Squad characters, but we still get the gags and zaniness that is still surely influenced by being in the Simpsons’ world. Seriously, go out and purchase this because its worth EVERY cent.
