Reddit AMA Recap: Brendon Small

Recently, Brendon Small took part in a Reddit AMA session, and in it, he got bombarded with a TON of questions.

And yes, while we did get some notes about Metalocalypse like how the show was derived from Brendon’s hatred of reality TV, his favorite episode being Doomstar, and that we will never see the conclusion of the Dethklok story, the best answers were about Brendon’s earlier collaboration with Loren Bouchard, Home Movies.

For those that don’t know, Home Movies featured a kid named Brendon Small who loves to make movies with his family’s video camera. At the same time, he must put up with the adults in his life: his unintelligent soccer coach, and his divorced mother, Paula. Along with a group of friends, he acts out his fantasies in front of the camera.

Check out some Q&A highlights courtesy of Brendon having to do with Home Movies which just released earlier this year with a repackaged re-release:

How much of Home Movies was HIS upbringing (by the way, don’t expect Walter & Perry in Bob’s Burgers)

a lot of home movies was “wishing” instead of reality. I wish that kids had that jokey relationship with adults. They don’t actually. But it was all how I’d like to see things. McGuirk is ALL Jon Benjamin- he’s a master.

Could there be a reboot?

Loren and I get approached to do a reboot occasionally- we both feel like we like where the show ended- and coming back to it wouldn’t be the same. We’d like to honor the show by leaving it where we left it- it ended exactly the way we wished to end it!

On how much of Home Movies is improved versus scripted

Home Movies 1st five episodes were improvised off of outlines and we got into trouble w story telling but the characters and tone were totally there- so when we came back on the air Bill Braudis (amazing writer for Dr Katz) and myself wrote all the scripts. And we’s read through each scene and try to do it from memory and allow for tons of improv. so it’d be a combo of both but the improvised performance were always better and more human
