WATCH: Fetty Wap meets Doug Funnie in New Mash-up… & Creator Mylo the Cat Talks to Us About It

Doug

As much as I’ve been obsessed with The Simpsons since a very young age, my number one cartoon love as a youngster was a little Nickelodeon show called Doug.

Well imagine my surprise & delight when Mylo the Cat – he of the numerous super-viral Muppet/rap mash-ups – released a new video for Fetty Wap’s “Trap Queen” and chose Mr. Doug Funnie himself as the star. Which of course begs the question: why the change?

“I, of course, love the Muppets, and love that format,” Mylo told BubbleBlabber in an exclusive interview. “But I can’t help but worry that people are going to get tired of them. I really want to make sure each character matches up to the songs perfectly, so I’m trying to spread out the Muppet ones going forward. I always wanted to attempt a cartoon, and after my last one exploded across the web a couple weeks ago [the Miss Piggy/Rihanna video for “Bitch Better Have My Money”] I really felt like it was time to change things up.”

It paid off. And, as always, the details were a major strength of this clip, with scenes & imagery from the show lining up perfectly with the lyrics, in addition to their mouths appearing to form the words.

Since this video and the last were both released via Vulture, the process has been slightly different lately.

“I’ve been collaborating with the great Abraham Reisman of NY Mag/Vulture, and since day one of him contacting me, he was pitching this Fetty Wap song,” Mylo explained. “I’m out of the loop when it comes to new music, so I really didn’t know this song, but the second I threw it on, I could tell right away why it’s a hit right now.”

It’s worth nothing that this entire new effort and production came after the Miss Piggy clip was released, meaning all the development and work was done on a fast-track schedule.

“Abraham and I were brainstorming ideas, and he suggested three different character combinations [initially.] I honestly don’t even recall what the other two were, because the Doug Funnie/Patti Mayonnaise combo was the perfect choice,” he said. However, despite the amount of animation available out there, it wasn’t an easier endeavor.

“This was actually way harder than the Muppets. If I just do regular old mouth movements, it looks like garbage; I have to really go out of my way to find the right clips,” Mylo told us. “I went through the entire first two seasons [of Doug] and pulled clips from probably around 30+ episodes. I also listened to the song literally around 500 times, to be sure I knew every second of it. For some reason, my process involves me walking around my town at all hours of the night, listening to the song over and over again,” which can sometimes appear odd, he joked. “My dear friend Kate spotted me on one of these walks at midnight last week, and was like, ‘What the hell are you doing?!’”

All-in-all, Mylo said it took about 20 to 30 hours to make “Trap Queen,” working almost nonstop since the last video.

Before we split, I asked Mylo if there’s anything else he would like to add about his work. [Side note: I had previously commented on the use of a very brief Rick and Morty clip in his “Shimmy Shimmy Ya” video – and he was only vaguely familiar with the show at the time. That has since changed.] “I’d like to publicly thank Gonzo for putting me on to Rick and Morty, which is now one of my favorite shows on TV!” he said, ever the gentleman. “There’s already a Rick and Morty mash-up out there, so I don’t know if I would do one just yet – but let’s just say that if this Doug Funnie one even remotely works, there will be many new cartoon ones in the future!”

On behalf of BubbleBlabber, we’d like to say: “Fuck yeah, Mylo!”
