‘The Simpsons’ Original 4:3 Aspect Ratio Returns on Simpsons World App

Al Jean 4-3 Tweet

Although last summer’s 522-episode Simpsons marathon was an enormous success and brought joy to the entire FXX-watching world, many folks were upset about the show’s new 16:9 widescreen format, demanding a return to the older 4:3 aspect ratio. The Simpsons World app has answered their prayers.

As announced by series executive producer Al Jean on Twitter, the first seven classic seasons have now been restored to their former glory (with more to come) and old school animation nerds can now rejoice.

The complainers weren’t just being sticklers for the days of old, but had a legitimate gripe, given that the change affected composition and ruined some visual gags featured at the top or bottom of the original frame.

The Simpsons isn’t the only show that received criticism following an aspect ratio change, however, as The Wire and Buffy the Vampire Slayer have faced similar situations.
