The Creator Of “The Simpsons” Was Working On Another Animated Series With Ed Sheeran

In a new interview with Ed Sheeran, the English singer notes that the first song he ever wrote nearly became the theme song for a TV series that Matt Groening (The Simpsons) was developing entitled Typical Average Teen.

As it turns out, Sheeran has a cousin that knows Matt, and the two had a connection as the series title matched the song title that would later be part of an unreleased demo featuring songs that were all about the rise and fall of his first relationship with a woman. Nothing happened with the series. However, Ed would later become a guest voice for The Simpsons in the episode “Haw-Haw Land” as the voice of Lisa Simpson love interest “Brendan Beiderbecke”.

As for Groening, who knows what the real reason why this series didn’t go through. Ed’s EP released officially in 2005, which means if he was working on music around this time, Matt was busy with The Simpsons and Futurama, the latter of which would make it’s televised return in 2007 with Comedy Central-produced feature-length films that ultimately brought the series back for two additional seasons. The year 2004 was also notable for the year in which the cast of The Simpsons would begin hardballing both the network and producers for raises, doing everything like not showing up for script reads for what was ultimately a 30-day strike.

My how times have changes.
