TBS Digital Launches Conan Snapchat Series

We told you guys earlier this year that Conan O’Brien was working on a Snapchat animated series and now that show has officially launched.

It’s called Comedy Club and it’s a live-action/animated series featuring the likes of Matt Braunger, Caleb Synan, Emily Heller, Maria Bamford, Tommy Johnaquin, Mo Welch, Moses Storm and Matthew Broussard. According to TBS Digital GM Steve Baslow, “Comedy Club marks Team Coco’s most ambitious platform-specific production to date with TBS. The series was shot, illustrated and animated specifically with Snapchat’s vertical orientation and video player in mind. Each episode also heavily incorporates quick transitions, text overlays and other post-production techniques that are rarely found in traditional comedy videos but will be instantly recognizable to any Snapchat user.

The result is an animated series that should appeal equally to the Conan and Snapchat audiences.”

Our Take

What Comedy Central and TBS are doing is dipping their toes into short-form content, however, neither of them have really have a measuring stick in terms of what is successful on social and quite frankly I don’t think anyone else does either. Whenever someone makes something, producers are looking for a return on that investment, and when that DOESN’T happen, they move the content to somewhere that DOES offer restitution, which in this case, would be advertising.

Snap, Inc., Facebook, and other social outlets are on the ground floor of offering premium content, but by the time they REALLY flesh out, will people care? People are already sick of Facebook and Twitter’s shit after the Russian shenanigans which could have long-term effects on both companies in the near future. In other words, TBS and Comedy Central could be throwing money in a barrel they may never get anything back from.
