Six reasons why #VentureBros would make a great feature film!

You know, The Venture Bros. is one of my favorite cartoons of all time. It’s witty, sleek humored, with tons of action, great sci-fi spoofage, and enough colorful characters to keep fans entertained for days. It is also a cult hit with legions of diehard fans (ever been to a comic convention where there WASN’T a Venture Bros. cosplay? You can’t find one!) With this being the Era of the Comic Book Movie, I feel the

Venture Bros. would make a terrific live action film. Here’s why:

1) We are due for a big budget Sci-Fi comedy. Green Lantern and Superman Returns don’t count as those two were unintentionally funny. Venture Bros. lends itself well to a major summer blockbuster because it has colorful villains, lots of action, and with the proper casting, screenplay, and director, would encompass everything Hollywood seems to give us summer in and summer out. The show’s irreverent sense of humor really connects with today’s audiences who want both raunchy and smart. Venture Bros. has both.

2) There are stories enough for 10 movies. Venture Bros., if looked at as a serious Science Fiction/Action franchise (just for argument’s sake, mind you, we all know it’s a spoof at the very heart of it,) has a ton of great stories to follow. It doesn’t have to be Dr. Venture and co. versus The Monarch all the time. The writers could come up with a lot of great hijinks and shenanigans for Team Venture to half-ass-edly plow their way through.

3) The Venture Bros. don’t have to be kids. The great thing about actors is they don’t have to be teenagers to play teenagers. With the right casting, and keeping in the spirit of a potential film being a spoof, two older comedic actors could play Hank and Dean, leading to some potentially memorable improvisation.

4) The writers of the show could write the movie. Often, when a book or cartoon is given the Hollywood treatment it loses something in the translation, for example, The Shining completely deviates from King’s tale of a man struggling with alcoholism and becomes a startling tale of cabin fever and homicidal psychosis. It gives us something completely different than what people are used to. I’m not saying it’s a bad thing, but with a property like The Venture Bros. people have certain expectations. Diehard fans want to see something specific, and the writers of the show could give us the screenplay this live action film requires with enough Team Venture goodies to leave us good little Fanboys and girls drooling like Baron Von Unterbheit without his bottom jaw.

5) But maybe bring in someone who can make it appeal to a wider audience. Fanboys and Fangirls tend to live in a bubble of their respective fandoms. Basically we want to see the movies we want to see, oftentimes forgetting the bottom line in Hollywood, which is box office dollars. I think bringing in someone who not only respects the source material, but also understands what movie exec’s expect, can collaborate with the writers to give us a movie that reaches and entertains everyone. Big Box office numbers means sequels and more sequels means more Venture Bros.

6) Bring in a veteran director. I would love to see Ivan Reitman or Harold Ramis take on this project. Both worked on Ghostbusters, a comedy blockbuster that is still relevant today and has become a permanent mainstay in popular culture and Reitman worked on the underrated Sci-Fi comedy Evolution. These guys know funny and can get the most from their actors.
