Review: Venture Bros. “Maybe No Go”

This week’s episode starts with Billy shouting “You can’t put mouthwash into cookie batter!” Which is pretty much exactly how my Super Bowl Sunday started when I caught my nephew trying to make Broncos helmet cookies in my kitchen.
As The Monarch’s status of being an arch villain continues to diminish in episode 2, him and Gary come up with a plan to push him back up the ranks. They go on a road trip to take down the other villains that are ahead of him in line. The Monarch gives way too much information to Gary about what goes on with him and Dr. Mrs The Monarch in the bedroom. Gary appears to throw up a little in his mouth and lets The Monarch know he should keep that kind of talk to himself.
I’m a sucker for pop culture references and The Venture Bros never disappoints. There are a ton of 80s shout outs in this episode and that is directly in my wheelhouse.  John Hughes, Molly Ringwald and Duran Duran make the list. A hilarious theory is given that if there was no John Hughes, then Tootie from Facts of Life would hold a political office. Don’t ask me to explain but I was laughing.
There is a twist in this episode that I did not see coming. We find out that the “Crusaders Action League” who we met last week during the premiere, actually works for the Wide Wale. It is definitely more clear now why this band of misfit Superheroes charge for their good deeds and protection. I think we are going to be seeing a lot of the Wide Wale as the season goes on. No pun intended.
All in all the writers do a great job of keeping us interested and laughing as we jump back and forth between the 3 plot lines.
