Review: The Amazing World Of Gumball “The Singing”

It’s been a while since we went gumming.

Possible Spoilers Below

When I first heard the premise, I thought it’d be a blatantly obvious parody of the 2016 CG animated film Sing but much to my surprise, it’s just an obligatory musical episode with zero focus on the Waterson kids in favor of the various & diverse characters within Gumball’s town of Elmore.

The episode itself has an eclectic amount of song-style parodies that are well handled. From a J-Pop song by the neat-freak Teri about the dangers of filth to a country-song parody from the simple-minded Richard for his love of Fried food to a short-parody of the Adelle song “Hello” by the planet Pluto. But easily my favorite moment was near the end with a small visual parody of the Apex Twin song “Come to Daddy” that has to be seen to be believed.

Our Take

A short but surprisingly fun episode. I got a good laugh from the music, pop-culture & visual jokes that it managed to pull off which shows the amount of care & attention it consistently has with its writing. Much like The Simpsons or a Steven Universe episode, it doesn’t always have to make the kid-protagonists the primary focus to be entertaining and sometimes that can work when it plays to a shows strengths.
