Review: The Amazing World Of Gumball “The News”

Overview (Possible Spoilers Below)

This episode itself doesn’t really have a character to follow unless you count the news Anchorman, but this was primarily a series of comedic news-related setpieces & scenarios which are all tied with the townspeople of Elmore in some form or another and are all hosted by an Anchorman named “Kip” who’s only running joke is that his last name inconsistently changes to something nonsensical each time it cuts back to him in between random news reports with his corresponding partner “Mike” who has a literal microphone for a head.

Many of these random setpieces come across as both laughably pathetic and incompetent at best. For instance, talking toilets protesting while making terrible toilet puns, Richard making a police report about a french fry that was “stolen by Ants”, a children’s mascot having a violent meltdown But near the end of the news segment reaches a point when Kip & Mike are unable to find a credible news story to cover while “wasting your precious time” before a cleverly designed puppet named “Barry” loudly spouts out the word “sports” in rapid succession like a Pokemon but the final setpiece before the episode ends is when it cuts to the local weatherman who’s joke is an obvious one if you know what not to do infront of a green screen.

Our Take

This was refreshingly funny with its randomness as the news people come across as desperate to make a report about something but at its core, the jokes felt like they catered more to an adult audience with its satirical jabs about the repetitive nature of the news in a comedic way. Nobody in the Waterson family was the focus. But in this instance, they didn’t have to be for the jokes to work.
