Review: SuperMansion “Logs Day Journey Into Night”

Spoilers Below

As SuperMansion continues on its ramp up to the finale, the League of Freedom is feeling the effects of Rex’s big sacrifice. Their leader’s fake admission to being a Subtopian double agent caused the team to get banned from superheroing for three years. The members have scattered. Robobot has an office job, where most importantly he gets another chance to play dress up in a shirt and tie (and mysteriously missing pants). His company’s seismographs are showing deep tectonic shifts that can only mean the imminent arrival of more Subtopians.

Meanwhile, Rex is spending his time up in the woods with a beard, working a job chopping down trees under the name Jack Lumber. He’s good at it, too. That’s fortunate for the land’s owner, Pappy, who’s about to lose everything to Marcus Rector in a lumberjack contest.

Robobot gets the team back together again and tells them about Rex’s secret anti-magno rod, the only thing that can destroy Subtopians. He also tells them how Lex Lightning stole it back in episode four. If the League wants to fight the Subtopians, they’re going to have to team up with the Injustice Club. Lex agrees. She likes the idea of killing all Subtopians. That’s the half of herself she hates the most – the half she got from Rex.

In the tree chopping contest, Rex is set to win. But somehow, Marcus Rector knows Jack Lumber’s secret identity and threatens to blow his cover. Of course, Rex is too good not to do what’s right and reveals himself in order to save the business for Pappy.  Then, finally, more Subtopians reach Earth’s surface.

That episode went by fast. Even though it was a full story I felt like only 15 minutes had gone by when it was done. This is another episode that is working to set up future plays. It also had just enough substance on its own to not totally feel like a stepping stone. It’s nice to see that even though Rex has been hurt by his hero image, he’s not willing to give it up if it’s necessary to save others. I also wonder if Marcus Rector (and his sons Elton and Billy Joel) will be a factor in upcoming episodes. We haven’t yet learned how Marcus knew who Rex was. “Logs Day Journey Into Night” accomplishes what it set out to do and moves the story forward while setting it up for big things to come. I’m ready to see how it goes down!
