Review: SuperMansion ‘A Midsummer Night’s Ream’

SM E7

Spoilers Below:

A female villain, Blood Moon, “dumped” Black Saturn, and he took it pretty hard. With some help from an imprisoned Groaner, he learned a few jokes and hit the dating scene.

Meanwhile, JewBot lamented his lack of penis and consulted the ladies (Lex & Cooch) about it, considering himself (or herself) a woman. JewBot was given a makeover, and also hit the dating scene. “She” didn’t have much luck meeting a man, until she ran into an intoxicated Black Saturn, who bedded the bot.

As for the others, Brad, Rex, and Ranger joined MuscleReam, a CrossFit-type fad workout that completely broke them. With the strongest heroes fatigues and the ladies hungover, MuscleReam founder Johnny Rabdo revealed himself as a wannabe supervillain, and tied the heroes up – the conscious ones, at least. It was then that JewBot “dumped” Saturn, who was so upset that he busted out of his restraints, beat the shit out of Johnny Rabdo, and saved everyone.

In Case You Missed It:

1) This is the first week that the opening credits included Lex.

2) One of American Ranger’s first choices for shows to catch-up on? Friends. Well played.

3) American Ranger called coupons “gypsy food stamps.”

4) Black Saturn’s dating video was “directed by Brett Ratner,” the director of the Rush Hour movies, X-Men: The Last Stand, and numerous other films.

5) The dating book given to Saturn (How to Game Women) was written by Zeb Wells, SuperMansion producer and voice of JewBot.

6) If a girl on a blind date ordered us two Bud Lights, I’d end it immediately, because clearly she has no respect for herself or me.

7) Was that a studio audience reacting when Lex spewed in the trash?

8) JewBot referred to Saturn taking her virginity as “obliterat[ing] my HDMI port.”

It seemed complicated at first, but yesterday’s episode (watch it here) ended up having one of the best overall stories in SuperMansion thus far. When it began, I wasn’t sure the direction, since there were so many different plots. Black Saturn got dumped, Lex was still trying in vain to befriend Cooch, JewBot began identifying as a woman, and the guys started a new workout regimen. ‘Could there really be four separate plotlines?’ I wondered. (Plus, they didn’t even introduce a villain yet.)

Of course not. Like a good sitcom, the stories converged as the episode progressed. First Saturn was dumped, then that spawned the JewBot story, which spawned both the girls & MuscleReam plots, which led to Saturn & JewBot hooking up, which led to the breakup that saved everyone. Neat & tidy. Weird, but neat & tidy.

Along the way we got a healthy dose of jokes, including some nice background and/or subtle ones. I also enjoy that a superhero show like this one can include some inside jokes and cultural references as well, such as the pokes at Girls & Lena Dunham.

And to top it all off, although the episode involved everyone, it was Saturn-centric, making it even better. I honestly believe BS is the best main character on the show, mainly because of his complexities. He’s a grown-up rich kid that’s awful with women and pretty bad at being one of the guys too – plus, he’s not a very good or interesting superhero. Still, he’s confident to the point of cockiness, making his attempts & failures all the more hilarious.

We may have had funnier episodes this season, and we may have had better stories, but save for the pilot, we haven’t had a combination of the two as good as “A Midsummer Night’s Ream.’
