Review: Star vs The Forces of Evil “Friendenemies; Is Mystery”

It’s no mystery that Star vs the Forces of Evil is a good show.

Spoilers Below

Marco wants to go to a Mackie Hands movie marathon. Sadly, the marathon is sold out. But Star’s ex-boyfriend, Tom, has tickets. Tom invites Marco to hang out with him before going to the movies. Both excited and hesitant, Marco agrees. Amazingly, the boys have a lot in common. However, it eventually comes out that Tom is only hanging out with Marco to get his anger management badge. Tom was a mere 4 minutes away from success before Marco screwed it up by wanting to actually go to the movie marathon. When Marco tells Tom (through a ballad by the boy band, Love Sentence) how hurt he is, Tom tries to win Marco back by bringing Mackie Hands back from the dead. The boys once again bond as they watch zombie Mackie Hands beat up a movie usher.

“Is Mystery” brings us back to the season 1 bad guys. Buff Frog, now a dad, investigates a hole in the force field. When he gets captured, he finds out that someone is hoarding corn. Of course, it turns out to be Ludo. The little guy has gone completely mad. Ludo tries to get Buff Frog to rejoin him but Buff Frog decides to go back to his family instead. Armed with the knowledge of Ludo’s plans, Buff Frog decides that he needs to warn Star. I wonder how that will go.

This episode was a little all over the place for me. I enjoyed “Friendenemies” a little too much. Marco’s favorite band being a typical boy band is hysterical and amazing. The fact that Tom has many of the same likes is awesome. Star’s ex-boyfriend and her best friend being friends? They are begging to be the Real Housewives of Mewni. On the other hand, I was rather bored by “Is Mystery.” I know that they need to move the plot forward but they could have found a more interesting way to do it. Buff Frog is a great side character but not really a main character. It was a slightly interesting that he seemed smarter than the other bad guys around him. It just wasn’t interesting enough to keep me from playing games on my phone. Maybe it will be better once Star is back in the fold.
