Review: RWBY “Unforeseen Complications”

Faunus politics in overdrive.

Overview:

Ghira makes a public speech denouncing Adam, kicking up a conflict between the two groups. In the meantime, Oscar demonstrates his new powers, and Weiss takes her chances against Raven’s tribe.

Our Take:

The Belladonnas are, unfortunately, behind on the news. Ghira speaks out against Adam and his extreme methods, but he does it under the expectation that Adam’s group is a splinter group and not the seeming majority of the White Fang. He also seems unaware that the coup has taken place, and that Sienna is dead. His speech moves those that attended, but it’s unclear if his words will resonate with the rest of the faunus. While the everyday faunus might agree with what Ghira says, those who have actual military might, the White Fang, seem to heavily disagree with his methodology. RWBY isn’t generally interested in showing the audience what the public tends to think, only those who can fight for themselves. This is understandable, considering that one of the strengths of the show is its action sequences. As a result, the conflict will be between the Belladonnas and the White Fang, and the public’s opinion will likely be a backdrop. A bit of a shame, but the audience demands action.

Ozpin has been a mysterious figure throughout most of the series, and it’s ironic that only once he’s lost his body do we find out more about him. It turns out that he and Salem are old enemies, and he is continuously reincarnated as a curse for being unable to stop her the first time. As a result, he is not really the original Ozpin, and more of an amalgamation of the souls he’s bodysnatched across the years. Knowledge is passed on, but personalities slightly change. That’s mildly terrifying, but it’s become so normal for Ozpin that it doesn’t phase him anymore. Of course, the latest incarnation is Oscar, who is still not used to all of this.

Weiss is kept prisoner, but she isn’t fearful at all. The first thing she does is use her family as a weapon and tries to gain leverage that way. Unfortunately, Winter has been withdrawn under Ironwood’s orders and is in no position to help her. Her weapon has been confiscated, and she’s trapped in a cage. However, she can summon a miniature Arma Gigas, and she will likely use it to break out next episode.

Mostly setup this time around, but it has shed answers on some questions we’ve had for a while now.
