“Cool Uncle”

Qrow teaches Ruby and Yang about gambling in a bar when Taiyang comes over. Taiyang is shocked at what Qrow is teaching them, and says that his daughters learned everything they needed to know from him. The girls laugh when they hear him call himself a cool dad, and he’s shocked. They realize he was being serious. Qrow walks off, and the girls eagerly follow him. Unhappy, Taiyang makes fun of Qrow, and tries to drink the glass of alcohol he left on the table. One sip in and he spits it out, claiming that the alcohol burns his throat.

“Clean Behind the Ears”

“Cool Dad”

Qrow is walking with Yang and Ruby when Taiyang passes by on a skateboard pulled by Zwei. Zwei sees a cat, and in chasing after it, ends up flinging Taiyang into traffic. Taiyang continues to try to compete with Qrow, including diving and dancing. He admits that he’s just doing it because he wants his girls to think he’s cool, but Ruby and Yang insists that dads don’t need to be cool, they just need to be good fathers. That reassures Taiyang.

Qrow claims his work here is done, but Velvet points out that he didn’t do anything.

Score:

6/10

We don’t get much of Taiyang in the actual series, so we have some more comedic and expanded details on his complex towards Qrow. He loves his daughters, and he wants them to adore him the same way they adore Qrow. He fails to realize that they do actually love him a lot, but he doesn’t have to go out of his way to do life-threatening tricks to win their respect. It’s a cute short overall.
