Review: Red vs Blue “The Chronicle”

The arrival of those that specialize in combat journalism.

Spoilers Below:

Andrews arrives at Blood Gulch and quickly starts documenting everything that she sees. She gets upset when her cameraman doesn’t have the camera on, and slowly drags it out of him that this is actually his first forage into the field. The cameraman, who introduces himself as Frank, is actually an intern who is unsure about his future direction in life. He tries to be humorous and suggests that he adopt a stage name of ‘Jakz’, but Andrews isn’t interested. After a brief argument, Andrews agrees to give Jakz some free reign.

When they begin filming, Kaikaina emerges from the base and tells them to keep it down. Andrews realizes who she is, and asks for an interview. Kaikaina explains that she is mostly hosting events and parties in Blood Gulch, and has not been in contact with her brother. However, she is adamant that despite the news, she highly doubts that her brother could become a criminal.

At Kaikaina’s suggestion, they go talks to Vic, who is still active but glitchy. Vic has since kept all of the video files on the Reds and Blues and agrees to hand them over if they do one thing for him— pull the plug. Jakz points out that doing so would kill him, and Vic responds that he doesn’t mind. Rather, doing nothing forever has been torture for him. He backpedals and says that he’s joking, but it’s implied that he’s serious.

Andrews emerges with the video logs and a vague answer to what happened to Vic. She says she has a lot to look over, and when Jakz suggests going back, she turns him down. With their first lead, they are just getting started.

On the cliff overhead, a mysterious person with a horned helmet watches over them and agrees with Andrews’ statement.

Overview:

Instead of the Reds and Blues, it seems the season is set to follow Andrews. So far we see that she is very dedicated to her work and determined to get to the bottom of the story. She can also be serious to a fault and snaps at Jakz when he tries to be humorous. However, she has enough self-assessment to realize her mistakes and apologize.

Her mission is to “find the facts, tell the story”. For her, “truth is (a journalist’s) currency”. However, she already seems to have some pre-existing biases. Kaikaina points out that Andrews already believe that the Reds and Blues are the ones behind the attacks, and doesn’t think about any alternative solutions. While this is presented in a comedic manner, Kaikaina is right, and Andrews already seems to have formed a conclusion for her story.

Overall, she is shaping up to be an interesting lead character for the season, and her determination is sure to take us places.
