Review: Penn Zero: Part-Time Hero ”Plantywood: City of Flora; Boone’s Apprentice”

Spoilers Below

Plantywood: City of Flora

Penn and Sashi are transported to a world where everyone is plants in a LA Noir-esque crime setting. The duo get side-tracked with some damzel in distress looking for her brother, but end up learning from Larry that Rippen wants to spray weed killer all over ‘Plantywood’. Penn and Sashi are able to get in the way just before Rippen’s plan is put into motion.

Our Take

I wasn’t quite on board with everyone as plants until the end, but overall I really enjoyed the detective story because we were served with a fun story-line twist. There were definitely some components missing that would’ve made this a TRUE homage, but overall, a solid Penn episode.

Boone’s Apprentice

Boone and crew are zapped into a world where everyone is animals, but also a time of barbarians and wizards. Boone needs to come up with a spell to stop Rippen from hatching his plan, so he calls on an apprentice named Hogarth to help him out. Unfortunately, the little owl becomes a big pain in the ass and distracts Boone with nachos. Fortunately, when Boone doesn’t think too hard and just acts like Boone, he’s able to come to the conclusion a lot faster and stop Rippen in his tracks.

Our Take

Blake Anderson and Adam DeVine make a solid tag team in both live-action AND as cartoons. This time around they hysterically team up as birds trying to concoct a spell for Rippen, and the banter back-and-forth is what really gets me. That, and the Franki Valli-inspired songs coming from the dragon had me laughing. Plus, who doesn’t love nachos?
