Review: Mr. Pickles ‘Tommy’s Big Job’

Spoilers Below

Tommy meets the girl of his dreams and her name is Suzie. Tom heads to Suzie’s farm to tell her how he feels. Problem is she wants a working man, so Tommy heads downtown with Mr. Pickles to get a new job. Unfortunately, this leads to Tommy getting a boob job and a very upset pooch who wants revenge. When life gives you lemons, you make lemonade, so Tommy heads to the strip joint and BAM now he’s a stripper! And even though Mr. Pickles can’t go inside, he DOES spot the son of a bitch that gave Tommy his titties to begin with!

Pickles knocks the fucker out, fucks the horse, then smacks it on the ass to get the hell out of here. Pickles breaks into the strip club and kills the owner and his lady. Suzie’s dad gets a wind of Tommy and decides to marry him, but Tommy comes bearing gifts and she starts to see the gentleman in him.

Meanwhile, this lady is trying to frame Mr. Goodman, but he just goes along with it. Goodman takes the lady home, and she threatens rape unless if he stays and watches TV with her.  Eventually, work calls home and Stanley’s wife begins to worry about him, so she heads off in search of her man. Unfortunately, Jane ends up catching her husband in the act, but when they head back to the Milton farm, the crazy lady comes clean, but Grandpa shows up with shit all over him.

At the end of the day, Mr.Pickles has the most frenetic pace of any show on Adult Swim save for MAYBE Superjail. We get our breaks, and when we do we soak in everything that’s going on. For starters we have a Satanic dog that is certainly up to something when no one is looking, and Grandpa knows it. But during the day, he’s Tommy’s loyal and faithful protector. Another thing you are going to love about Mr. Pickles going forward, are the animated shorts that seem to briefly pop up every episode. The pilot episode did one, and now this episode did one called  Astronaut Dolphin Detective. And yes, they’re just as weird as anything else Daybyday comes up with.

Grandpa wasn’t that big of a factor this week and truth be told I’m not sure Mr. Pickles was exactly the star for this episode which I think should have been established from the onset. In the pilot, we got to see a LOT of him. In the premier episode? Not so much. We spent more time with Tommy and the Milton mess, which is fine, but are we planning on spending a LOT of time with the Miltons going forward, or are we going to spend more time with Pickles going forward? I’m hoping it’s more the latter because that’s what makes the series one of the most unique.

Moving forward, this series has SO much going for it. For starters, the contrast in worlds with the downtown almost gritty old-school New York City-esque setting versus the more rural parts of the town provides for limitless story-telling opportunities. Oh yea, and we have Mr. Pickles’ pit of hell to look forward to as well!
