Review: Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy “Free Bird”

No, not the song.

Spoilers Below

This week’s episode of Guardians of the Galaxy features Quill and crew going to different Ravagers’ hideouts looking for Yondu and the sarcophagus. They don’t find him, but what Groot DOES find is an egg that he decides to keep as his own. All of these hideouts come equipped with Quill’s traps that he made as a kid which is an important note that comes into play when they visit the second planet of the episode and run into Proxima and Black Dwarf who have agreed to team up with Ebony Maw to help ascertain the sarcophagus for themselves. They get beaten down by Quill and Gamora while Groot runs away, but the bad guys don’t stay down.

Quill gets his entire team trapped thanks to one of his own designs and soon finds themselves on the other end of an onslaught from Maw and his new pals. Fortunately, Groot’s egg hatches an eagle and helps even the odds in battle. We’re no closer to Yondu, but we got some fun out of it.

Our Take

This week’s episode…not terrible! Certainly the best episode of the series I’ve seen in a LONG time. We only got one light retread on the movie, and the shitty dialogue that usually plagues other episodes was subsided by more battles. Furthermore, I kinda enjoyed Quill obsessing over discovering his traps, even though it’s a pretty ridiculous concept to see him trap his own team multiple times. I also think the episode was helped by splitting the team in half, therefore your writers aren’t as worried about getting EVERY character on in terms of screen time, we can kinda focus on a couple and grow with the characters’ discoveries as the episode goes on. I’m also interested to see if the producers will dig deep into the Black Order and if we’ll get to see other members of the group run by Thanos, or if we’ll get to see Thanos at all.
