Review: Lego Frozen “Northern Lights”

The entire cast is here, so does the holiday continue the fervor that the original film had?

Spoilers Below

Disney and Lego have joined forces to bring us a Frozen holiday special. Elsa wants to show her little sister, Anna, the Northern Lights. The sisters, along with Kristoff, Sven, and Olaf, travel outside Arendelle for the best view of the Lights. Unfortunately, once they get there, the Northern Lights are nowhere to be found. The lack of Lights distresses Elsa, making her powers go wonky. Kristoff suggests they talk to the trolls to find out what is going on. However, Grand Pabbie isn’t there. So the group decides to go farther north to find the lights. After some wacky hijinks, they reach a giant glacier. At the top of the glacier, they find the Northern Lights and Grand Pabbie. It turns out that he uses some magical crystals to make the Lights appear. Now the Lights will be seen in Arendelle.

Like all of the other Lego franchises, there is a lot of tongue-in-cheek humor in this show. The characters frequently reference lines from the movie’s songs or other things the voice actors have done. (Olaf makes a “I’m defying gravity” joke, which references Idina Menzel’s (Elsa), stint as Elphaba in the Broadway hit, Wicked.) Most of those jokes weren’t particularly funny. Just eye-rolling.

Then there was the weirdness with Sven. There were a number of times that it looked like Sven, himself, was talking. Yet they also pointed out that Kristoff pretends Sven can talk. But during those Sven-talking times, Kristoff wasn’t nearby to talk for him. Toward the end, Sven was back to making reindeer noises. It was rather confusing.

I like Frozen. I like the actors. I like a lot of the Lego franchises. However, this was boring and cliched. There were too many times that Elsa was about to sing, only to not actually sing for one reason or another. I feel like both Disney and Lego don’t understand why people liked Frozen so much. This special completely misses the point.
