Review: Incredible Edible America “La La Land’s Tastiest Treats”

No Ryan Gosling sightings.

The Dunhams hit the road to Los Angeles for some of the city’s craziest sandwiches. A theme of this show seems to be outlandish food, which was not immediately made clear. There are a lot of shows about crazy food. “Incredible Edible America” still seems like a redundant show for Food Network. But, how else could you do it? Just tour the country checking out normal food?

First stop is Fat Sal’s famous for their Fat Sandwiches and the Big Fat Fatty with Fat Sauce. This might as well be a parody sandwich. A whole new genre of the sandwich. It’s also a competition sandwich, which, of course, it is. In fact, this whole segment is very “Man v. Food”. It’s just more frenetic, with very occasional puppets. Maybe I was wrong last week – maybe this show does need more puppets. It definitely needs more of anything that will set it apart.

Jeff and Audrey love the sandwich. They’re pretty good with the food descriptions again, and she’s still slightly more descriptive about the flavors. They end the segment with the sandwich not even half eaten.

DK’s Donuts has a Wownut (waffle donut) which is “crispy like a waffle and doughy like a donut”. It also has a ton of sugary chocolatey junk and blue cookie butter ice cream. Surprise, it’s delicious. Oh, and the puppets are still making a brief appearance in each segment.

Finally, they visit The Carving Board for its “Spaghetti-and-meatballwich” feat. spaghetti bread. It’s regular spaghetti baked with egg whites to make bread. This is obviously a brilliant idea. And of course, it’s delicious, because it’s spaghetti and meatballs. Then there’s a meatball puppet! Okay, he makes the episode worth it.

There’s nothing offensive about this show, but I wouldn’t leave it on in the background instead of changing the channel. I may have given last week’s episode extra points for the talking redfish head. If “Incredible Edible America” were a show about Jeff Dunham puppeteering various restaurant foods, there might be a concept there. It seems like after two episodes the show has lost its charm. Hopefully, it will find its footing soon. Jeff Dunham is famous for his characters, which so far, this show is lacking.
