Review: Harvey Beaks “Secret Gordon; The Unknown Comic”

It’s no secret, this show continues to showcase specialty and art direction that would make the big boys cringe in embarrassment.

Spoilers Below

“Secret Gordon

Harvey and Piri stumble into a garden named Gordon and Piri really enjoys the quality time the two spend together and even sings a song about it. Unfortunately, Harvey tells his friends about the once-secret locale for the two potential lovebirds to hang out and Piri yearns for it to just be a spot for her and Harvey. The garden responds by getting rid of the rest of the kids and pretty much trapping Harvey for a picnic in an attempt to get the two birds to smooch it out, but the two decide to call a spade a spade and remain friends. The duo sings a song and exit the garden as best pals.

The Unknown Comic”

Kratz becomes a comics producer and begins posting his work in the forest for all to see, but doesn’t want the embarrassment of being noticed so he leaves his name off. It doesn’t take long for Harvey Beaks to find some incriminating evidence which leads to Kratz in coming clean to JUST Harvey with a promise to not tell anyone else. Eventually, Princess starts taking credit for Kratz’s work and becomes really popular with the kids, but when Kratz challenges with a bag over his head, he mobs the floor with her in a drawing contest. In retaliation, Princess removes Kratz’s bag from his head and reveals the true identity of the talented artist much to the delight of all of his pals.

Our Take

Two pretty good episodes, both with flaws. I don’t care for songs, but the lyrics in “Secret Gordon” were humorous so I’ll let it slide. The best part of THAT episode was the art direction which certainly looked like featured cues from Avatar during the scenes featuring Piri and Harvey in the montage.

Similarly, unique artwork played a role in “The Unknown Comic”, most notably in the animated motion comics for both Princess and Kratz, both of which were really good. Princess’ comics looked like a straight up Squidbillies episode, and Kratz’s looked more like a He-Man effort and it worked. The contest climax has been done a number of times, not specifically with drawing, but we see contests all the time. “Secret Gordon” was the way more creative in premise and featured the kinda mystical elements that I like to see in my Harvey Beaks episodes.
