Review: Elena of Avalor “Model Sister”

This episode is certainly not a model.

Spoilers Below

The second episode of Elena of Avalor aired immediately after the first. This time around, Elena has promised her sister, Isabel, that she would help Isabel at an inventor fair. However, Elena also has royal duties to tend to. There are foreign dignitaries arriving and Elena has to play hostess. She tries to be in both places but fails miserably. Eventually, she admits that she promised to be there for Isabel and family comes first. Thankfully, her guests understand and Elena is able to help her sister.

It’s only the second episode and we’re already seeing what a douche Elena’s cousin, Esteban, is. He spends the entire episode trying to undermine Elena’s authority. From lying about when the guests are arriving to forcing her to learn how to use chopsticks in just a few minutes to downright admitting that he wants to be in the ambassador for Avalor. Honestly, his character ruined the entire episode. I get that the writers think the show needs a bad guy but, really, it doesn’t. Elena has enough on her plate with juggling royal duties with spending time with her sister that she doesn’t need a backstabbing cousin to give her conflict. I hope that he either comes around really soon or gets booted from the show.

For anyone thinking this sister story sounds a lot like Frozen, you’re not too far off. The movie about sisterly love was the lead-in to the premiere of Elena. I guess Disney decided sisters are worth a lot of money now.
