English Dub Review: Dragonball Super Ep.5: “The Ultimate Fight on King Kai’s Planet! Goku Vs the God of Destruction Beerus”

Another filler episode but slightly more entertaining.

Spoilers Below

Episode 5 begins with Beerus and Whis heading to King Kai’s planet while Goku hides in King Kai’s half-destroyed house. Goku tries his best to stay quiet, while stealthy peaking out and wonders to himself who exactly these individuals are. But Goku being the simple-minded dolt ends up getting excited, while Gregory (the tiny bug friend of King Kai) keeps him calm. There’s genuine comedic moments between the two.

King Kai consistently tries to distract Beerus while Goku is hiding, from him and even brings out his small monkey-pal Bubbles to meet them while acting like he’s the only other one there. Beerus of course quickly sees through the bullshit and is fully aware that he knows he’s hiding him.

King Kai then summons Goku who introduces himself with his simple-mindedly casual “hi, I’m Goku” moment before being knocked over the head by King Kai to show some decorum. They all converse while Beerus explains that he’s on a small quest to seek out a “Super Saiyan God,” But understandably, Goku & King Kai are left scratching their heads because neither of them don’t know What the fuck he’s talking about.

The Impulsively excited Goku, of course, asks for a battle with Beerus, which King Kai understandably objects to. Goku then gets even more antsy for battle, so he powers up to Super Saiyan Level-1, though he can’t even land a hit whatsoever on the Purple-Cat deity. Beerus gets bored quickly and starts yawning, showing just how weak Goku is compared to him at this point.

Goku then powers up into Super Saiyan Level 2, which is no better for him in the battle, as Beerus dodges every move once again. Goku then begins his Iconic Kamehameha Wave, but thinks better of it and charges at Beerus once again. This goes as well as before with him missing constantly. Eventually, Goku decides to show off only trump card right now, Super Saiyan Level 3 form to Beerus.

Goku and Beerus talk a little more before Goku once again charges at Beerus, and instead of dodging, Beerus just outright blocks all of Goku’s attacks. The fight is still completely one-sided, with Goku not getting in a single actual strike at all, even in his highest form. Goku finally fires a Kamehameha at Beerus, but he just blocks it with absolute ease, only leaving a cloud of smoke around him. Beerus even remarks that he can’t believe this is the Saiyan that managed to kill Frieza.

The force caused by the attacks take their toll and become more detrimental to King Kai’s house planet, which gets even worse when Goku fired his Kamehameha and it cuts right through the planet itself. At this point, Beerus decides to end the fight by moving right up on Goku with a simple flick to the face and then knocks him to the ground, reverting him to his normal form.

Beerus and Whis then say they are heading to Earth and move on, while King Kai starts to worry about all of Goku’s friends there with Beerus on his way. It then cuts to Vegeta on the luxury liner in a lounge chair getting yelled at by Bulma which is business as usual for the two.

King Kai then does the unthinkable as he telepathically contacts Vegeta warning him of the impending threat of “Beerus the Destroyer”, Vegeta says the name sounds familiar but King Kai presses the matter that he is now the last line of defense with Goku already defeated.

The episode ends with Goku getting back up off the ground realizing that even if he fused with Vegeta, they still wouldn’t be a match against him and despite knowing this, It only hardens his resolve to stop Beerus since he predicts that a fight between Beerus and Vegeta could “get ugly”.

Overview.

Episode 5 of DB Super’s Dub was the most action-oriented so far. This basically was an expanded version of the Goku and Beerus fight from “Battle of the Gods”, but it was well delivered at showing just how outmatched Goku was in his first Beerus Battle. It’s also been a while since I seen him in all 3 of his Super Saiyan forms since the Buu Saga.

This was probably the episode that retreaded the most from Battle of the Gods, as it was all within a fight that happened in the movie, with multiple parts being duplicated frame-by-frame. Hopefully, they’ll start to get creative with these action scenes so they don’t become full-on retreads.

And finally, I was moved by Goku’s courage after this episode. He didn’t care if Beerus was stronger than him but was still willing to selflessly try to stop him when he found out he was heading towards earth. It further displays the amount of selfless heroism he has and gives me a new level of respect for Goku as a character.
