Review: Crash & Bernstein – “Flushed in Space”

The episode begins with Crash and Pesto watching Wyatt play a video game. Unfortunately, Wyatt sucks and just can’t beat the game. While this seems utterly pointless, it is referenced again at the very end of the episode. It also sets the sarcastic tone between Wyatt and his sister, Cleo.

Eventually, the boys go on a field trip to the Bixby Spaceport. Crash manages to convince billionaire Trent Bixby that he, too, is a billionaire. This gets the entire gang (Crash, Wyatt, Pesto, Amanda, and Cleo) into the upcoming space launch. Though Wyatt tricks Cleo into missing the launch so she ends up spending the afternoon with Sheela, Trent’s sister.

Here is the funniest moment of the show: During take-off, the g-forces slams everyone back into their seats. Wyatt’s face does the typical sitcom-cheeks-flapping-in-the-wind thing. Crash, however, is a different story. His puppet eyes start sliding toward the back of his head. Absolutely hilarious.

While in space, Crash recklessly pushes every single button he can find. The first button he pushes launches the escape pod, leaving the ship without an emergency exit. Next, he pushes a button that turns off the gravity in the ship. When he goes to the toilet, he pushes all of the buttons he can find. He ends up covered in shaving cream, wrapped in toilet paper, and tossed into space with a plunger on his head.

Trent sees Messy Crash float past the window, mistaking the puppet for an alien. He rushes to the bridge to order the capture of the alien. Wyatt happens to be screwing around on the bridge when Trent arrives. The billionaire shares his discovery and starts jumping for joy when he hits his head and passes out. This means there is no one left to pilot the ship back to Earth.

Wyatt ends up trying to pilot the ship. Apparently, the video game he was playing at the beginning of the episode was a space simulator where he had to land a spaceship. And he died. A lot. But this is when Crash finds yet another button to push. Wyatt talks him out of pushing it, only to find out that it is an Auto Land button. The button is pushed and the ship lands safely.

There is a whole sub-story about brothers being jerks to their sisters but, honestly, it wasn’t very interesting. The writers didn’t spend nearly enough time fleshing out the Sheela character to make anyone care that Trent did awful things to her. In the end, it was just a set-up so Trent and Wyatt could shoot Sheela and Cleo back into space after the boys got back.

I have to admit that I did laugh at lot when Crash’s puppet eyes slid off his face. I don’t think they will be able to top that moment in the series finale. However, that moment still didn’t make the episode any good. The episode was still filled with situations that were completely outrageous. I, for one, will be very glad when this show is over.
