Review: Bob’s Burgers “Bob Actually”

No need for Colin Firth in THIS episode.

It’s Valentine’s Day and each of the Belchers get their own storyline. The episode begins with the family having breakfast. Linda gives each of the kids a card and Bob a heart-shaped box of chocolates. Gene starts eating the chocolates but spits the first on out because it’s dark chocolate. Tina is having gastrointestinal issues due to a chili-eating contest the kids had the night before.

Once the kids get to school, Tina spends most of the day in the restroom. When she is finally able to come out for a bit, Jimmy Junior asks her to meet him in the gym at lunch. Excitedly, Tina agrees to meet him. What she doesn’t know is that Jimmy Junior wants to have a “sky kiss” with her. A group that had performed at the school left their equipment behind, including a trampoline. Jimmy Junior wants Tina to jump on the trampoline with him so they can kiss when they are mid-air. But Tina’s diarrhea makes that impossible. After another trip to the restroom, Tina gets an idea. She checks the sports equipment room and finds out that the group also left behind a pair of stilts. Tina may not be able to jump on a trampoline but she can still give Jimmy Junior his sky kiss.

Louise is having a different problem. At first, she thinks that regular-sized Rudy has a crush on her. But it turns out that he has a crush on Chloe, a girl in Louise’s science class. Louise finds out that Chloe doesn’t actually like Rudy. She only flirts with him in order to get quiz answers. Despite Louise’s threats, Chloe refuses to give Rudy his first kiss. Instead, Louise steps up and kisses the boy. Of course, she threatens Rudy to not tell anyone.

Meanwhile, Gene has started to crush on the temporary cafeteria worker, Isabella. The two of them work together to make some chocolates for Isabella’s boyfriend. Much to Gene’s chagrin, they turn out to be dark chocolate candies. When he finally tries one of Isabella’s dark chocolates, he finds that good dark chocolate can be amazing. Isabella has opened a whole new world of chocolate for him.

Over to Bob. He had promised Linda that he would get ballroom dancing lessons. However, he never signed up for them. Teddy tells Bob that the place he takes Zumba has ballroom dancing classes. But when they get there, the ballroom classes have been canceled. They sign up for a hip hop dance class instead. The class is totally ridiculous but, apparently, they learn some moves. They take their new-found skills back to the restaurant where they, joined by the teacher and her son, perform a hip hop dance for Linda. Who absolutely loves it.

Finally, Linda. Since Bob left to take secret dance lessons, Linda was left to man the restaurant by herself during the lunch rush. Ms. Selbo unexpectedly shows up. She took the day off of work because her boyfriend broke up with her. The school receptionist then tells Linda about all of the creepy things she has done since the break up. When Linda attempts to get the two lovebirds back together, she finds out that this break up happened years ago. And Ms. Selbo has finally moved onto someone else. A random customer in the restaurant. But at least Linda gets to see Bob dance!

There was so much going on in this episode. It was interesting to see each of the family members on their own. Usually, Gene and Louise get lumped together, Linda and Bob have a combined storyline, then Tina is on her own. I liked that everyone got their own completely separate story and none of the stories were lacking. Props to the writers for handling all of this so well.
