Review: The Awesomes ‘Euro-Awesomes’

Spoilers Below:

The latest episode of The Awesomes wasted no time, so why should I? Let’s get right into it.

Prock’s former mentor, and a former scientist for the Awesomes, Dr. Turfenpeltz, was killed during a raid at his lab which Prock was too late to stop. With his dying breath, the doctor tasked The Awesomes with retrieving a device to prevent it from potentially being used as a horrible, devastating weapon.

The suspect? Whiskey Dick, a super-villain with the power to make people drunk. After he took off for Europe, the Awesomes decided to follow him, and eventually ran into the Euro-Awesomes, a non-affiliated superhero group (Mr. Awesome forgot to secure the naming rights.)

After encountering a gang of evil robots, Metal Fella/Hotwire appeared and used all of his/her power to save Prock from a swarm of the little killers. This caused her suit to deteriorate and revealed her identity to the team. In the midst of the epic battle (literally while fighting) Hotwire and Prock made up, while at the same time, Jaclyn received photos in the mail showing Prock in compromising situations. This caused Jaclyn to call Prock and break up with him, after which he and Hotwire immediately started kissing.

During her fit of uncontrollable rage, the PRICKS knocked on Jaclyn’s door and asked her to join their team.

In another twist at the end, Whiskey Dick turned out to be only operating under the orders of someone else, a giant replicator robot that was shocking controlled by a very-much-alive Dr. Turfenpeltz. The replicator sucked up everyone’s powers, and appeared to be unstoppable, until he utilized Prock’s time-stopping skill without knowing that using it for more than ten seconds can be deadly.

In Case You Missed It:

1) Drunk Awesomes are awesome Awesomes.

2) Dusseldorf and Madrid are not cities in Florida.

3) The Awesomes’ note to Perfect Man said: “P-Man, Went to Europe! There’s pasta salad in the fridge. <3”

4) Can we talk about Impresario planning to bring a girl home in a trunk?

5) The Euro-Awesomes are: The Flying Dutchman, Czechmate, Invisi-Pope, Hooligan, Crotch-Puncher, Mademoiselle Hunchback, and Knight Light.

6) Gadget Girl referred to the Euro-Awesomes as “Krauts, Limeys, and Frogs,” and in regard to the English, insisted she’ll “never forgive them for taxing our tea” and “surrendering to Hitler.”

7) The PRICKS homework assignment? Come up with three evil ideas. (Spider Santa/Animal Control had ONE job!)

8) Apparently robots can get drunk AND do ecstasy.

Although I was skeptical at first about this episode because it started with some weird flashback, had an apparent sub-plotline about Prock’s former mentor, and appeared to be headed toward a distracting trip to Europe, it ended up having one of the best stories of the season. And I do mean “stories” in plural form, because there were several of them:

We saw the usual Awesomes crime-fighting storyline, but this one also had Hotwire’s reveal and the merging of those two formerly separate storylines. Plus, the main plot had that underlying backstory involving new character Dr. Turfenpeltz. (Though he’s dead now, so so much for that.) Jaclyn & Prock’s relationship was addressed as well, with it ending, merging her with the PRICKS, who announced that their team is finally complete. The whole thing had a nice twist at the end too, which, although meaningless in the grand scheme, was nevertheless amusing to include. Even Perfect Man had an entertaining segment that was amusing in a Tom & Jerry/Castaway-type way.

I also enjoyed all of the Euro-Awesome characters, even though their presence didn’t really contribute to the story. But just like asking for more plot progression, I’ve also asked for additional creative superhero/supervillain characters, so both of these wishes came true this week.

On top of all that, it was pretty damn funny. Muscle Man was on point, Gadget Gal’s xenophobio provided some good laughs, and everybody had a little time to shine – except maybe Sumo and Frantic, to some extent, but they already had their own episodes this season, so it’s okay. In the end, this wasn’t quite the funniest episode of the season, but it didn’t have to be.
