Review: Adventure Time Elements “Skyhooks II”

The grand finale.

Spoilers Below:

Finn is shocked by Betty’s betrayal, and the candy citizens begin to close in on him. The Ice King expresses worry about Finn being left behind, but Betty reassures him that she has a new plan, where “nothing here will matter”. The Ice King trusts her judgment but still wants to help Finn. Betty knocks him out and then tries to reassure herself that she’s doing the right thing.

The candy citizens try to convert Finn, but LSP grabs him at the last second. Bubblegum tells them not to worry, for she will continue to spread her joy. She begins to sing again, which starts to turn the entirety of Ooo into candy.

Finn wonders why LSP is immune to the Elementals and their magic. He theorizes that because she’s from space, and technically not Ooo, she’s made of different material. LSP thinks back to a lesson her parents tried to give her, but she ended up not paying attention and barging out halfway through. In it, her parents explained that Lumps are what keeps molecules together, and are therefore more powerful than any Element. Finn realizes that LSP is the anti-Elemental.

The Ice King wakes up, bound by rope. Betty, using the Enchridion, her own magic, the three Jewels, and the Ice Crown, plans to go back in time to stop Simon from ever finding the crown. Watching this, Prismo and Cosmic Owl are shocked. Betty admits that she can’t stand looking at the Ice King, because he reminds her of her failures, and also of what she lost. She starts up the machine, but Ice King, still not realizing that he’s Simon, is confused. He tries to get her to stop the spell so they can talk but ends up causing an explosion that teleports Betty elsewhere.

Bubblegum’s voice has started to encroach on the Ice Kingdom, and Patience groans about how she messed up. She says she will try again in another thousand years and freezes herself back into a protective frozen orb.

Finn tries to rationalize how to use LSP’s potential powers but is first discovered by candied Gunter. The Ice King reunites with them, and hands Finn the Enchiridion. LSP gets frustrated with Finn ordering her around, and her burst of rage pulls the Jewels from the book and the Crown off the Ice King’s head. The Jewels orbit around her as she wears the crown, and LSP gets nervous. Finn realizes that LSP’s force of will attracts Elemental magic. Thrilled at her new powers, LSP insults Gunter, and Gunter returns back to normal.

LSP fuses with the ground and starts to reverse Ooo’s transformation. The Candy Kingdom returns to normal, and Sweet Pi happily reunites with his family. As the lumps pass over him, his second horn grows in. In the Slime Kingdom, the lumps undoes Slime Princess’ transformation, and everyone who was assimilated into her regains their bodies. She wakes up in a daze, and sees Jake, but is confused by his appearance.

Ooo returns to normal, and LSP tears herself out of the ground. Dazed and exhausted from overexerting herself, she collapses. She declares herself to be a hero, and Finn affirms that notion. Everyone cheers for her, as she falls asleep.

Betty wakes up in Magic Man’s throne room, and he tells her that she made a big mistake.

Finn hears Jake’s voice and rushes out in excitement. Jake appears, resembling a Shapeshifter; three times his size and with multiple eyes. He doesn’t even notice the difference. Finn is momentarily concerned, but is so relieved that his best brother is back. They embrace, and Jake reminds Finn that he loves him.

Overview:

LSP’s immunity is finally revealed: she is the anti-Elemental. Since she is from Lumpy Space, which is technically not a part of Ooo, she is comprised of Lump particles, which can reverse the Elements. It’s unclear if only the royals from Lumpy Space are able to pull off this feat, but most likely the fact that LSP was able to pull the reversal off so easily and quickly is due to her supreme force of will.

Betty, as suspected, had ulterior motives all along. Her entire path is trying to find some way to reverse the Ice Crown’s magic and bring Simon back, and gaining the Jewels and the Enchiridion was just another path she needed to try out. It’s implied that she would have succeeded, but as we’ve seen in previous episodes, messing with the past can have dire consequences. Whatever could have occurred was enough to get the extradimensional beings like Prismo worried, but luckily, the Ice King’s cluelessness managed to stop her.

The episode ends with Jake’s return, and his shift into his Shapeshifter form. He doesn’t see any difference between his regular dog form and his shapeshifter form, indicating that he always feels like this. Regardless of how he looks, Finn cares for his brother regardless, and the miniseries ends on a touching note.
