Review: Adventure Time Elements “Hero Heart”

Clash of the elements.

Spoilers Below:

The Flame Kingdom begins their march on the Candy Kingdom, much to the dismay of LSP. LSP tries reasoning with Finn, but he is too far gone, consumed by fire magic. Ice King and Betty arrive on a flying carpet, and Ice King resolves to try talking to Finn.

Back in the treehouse, Fern and Lemongrab are playing cards, when they see the incoming army. They rush out with lemonade and pies, thinking them to be customers. The pies end up destroying several warriors, but eventually, Fern and Lemongrab are overrun.

The Ice King tries calling out to Gunter, but he’s overcome by fire magic as well. Flame Princess ends up getting annoyed by them both and knocks them away with her tail. LSP chases after Finn again, but all he does is push her away.

Bubblegum sees the incoming parade but isn’t disturbed. Marceline thinks Flame Princess’ dragon form is cool and shapeshifts to compare. Flame Princess tries attacking Marceline, but the latter only thinks it’s fun. LSP watches Flame Princess burn Marceline’s face, and she rushes forward to catch her.

LSP confesses that she’s not sure that she has what it takes to be a hero since she lacks the experience. She bemoans not getting morphed like everyone else, and Marceline tries to cheer her up by smashing her marshmallow face over LSP’s. LSP consumes the burnt marshmallow and calms down significantly.

Finn climbs the tower and tries to attack Bubblegum, but LSP stands in his way. When Finn refuses to stand down, LSP smears some marshmallow over his face. The scent of burning marshmallow reminds Finn of the good times he had with Bubblegum and reverses the fire magic. He hugs LSP in gratitude, but she reminds him of his mission. He takes the Candy Jewel from Bubblegum’s crown, but she finds that sweet.

Bubblegum gets serious and concentrates her power into song and sugar. The dust turns everything it touches into candy, including Flame Princess. LSP saves Finn by shielding him from the dust. Flame Princess spits up the Flame Jewel, and Finn gives the jewels to Betty. Betty knocks Finn off the flying carpet and flies back to the Cloud Kingdom, leaving Finn to his fate.

Overview:

Candy magic is even creepier than before. Not only is everyone acting like everything is normal, but everyone is falsely cheery. When the incoming fire invaders are clearly hostile, the candied characters respond with laughter. Being deliberately attacked, even chopped in half, isn’t enough to make any of the candy people upset.

Bubblegum was the only Elemental without a grasp on her powers, but now she is shown to be the most powerful one of all. Her sugar can overpower her fellow Elementals, and with her warped sense of morals, she doesn’t believe she’s doing anything wrong. She calls LSP an ‘anomaly’ and quickly tries to fix her. She believes that it’s everyone’s fate to eventually be ‘sweet’, and is powerful enough to make that a reality.

LSP is shown to definitely be immune to elemental magic but doesn’t give an explanation why. Although she is very self-confident, this episode shows a weaker side of hers, where she admits that she doesn’t have the mettle to be a hero. She claims to have everything to qualify as one, but without experience, she doesn’t believe that she has what it takes to save the world. However, her determination and quick thinking manage to turn Finn back to normal, so she clearly has what it takes.
